| Using the Ulfsark as Odin | | | Posted 3.31.2004 @ 12:04:AM by Socvazius | | As a whole, Norse players rarely use the Ulfsark until late late Mythic, when the infantry units' cheap price and high stats (at that point) make it a fairly effective weapon. Before that, it's commonly seen as a very weak unit, overpriced, underpowered, and easily taken out by arrow fire. Well, Talon_373 disagrees. In a detailed and descriptive guide that he's posted in our forums, he shows Odin players how to effectively use the Ulfsark in games to allow for some solid early game fighting.
"Every Guide I read listed the Ulfsark as an easily countered and all but obsolete unit, and my first experiences using the unit affirmed this, Raiding cavalry cost the same raw resources, for a faster unit, with more hitpoints, and great pierce armor for the raiding I knew I needed to Slow, and occupy my enemy as I made my bid to heroic, and vie for map Control.
All my attempts at raiding and attacking with Ulfsarks were pretty ugly, they dropped like flys under arrow fire, and so I never thought to make them in favor of raiding cavalry. But I knew something was missing in Classical, because a good player CAN all-together defend himself from raiding cavalry stabs after 6 minutes, and when he does, your left the weakling in Classical." |
| ESO Fropco Opens | | | Posted 3.30.2004 @ 11:46:PM by Socvazius | | AoM Fropco has opened their own on-site ESO stats tool, ESO Fropco. Like the others that are online already, ESO Fropco provides all of the information on player and game statistics that you can get while being logged onto ESO. It's a pretty cool thing, here's the scoop from Frop:
"The AoM Fropco is proud to announce a new and powerful tool for viewing Ensemble Studios Online statistics from the outside. It is called ESO Fropco (http://eso.fropco.com), and uses php to pull XML data from the ESO servers and turn it into readable detailed stats.
Features: - Full AoM and AoM:TT support - Detail Player Stats - Player Search - Top 1000 Players Real time (grouped into 10 pages) - Top 1000 Players Detailed (updated once daily) - Recent Game Lists - Full GameStats with Graphs - Detailed Population Statistics - Time Offset setting with cookies - Community Statistics" |

| Guide to Anatolia by tbarak | | | Posted 3.28.2004 @ 4:25:PM by Shiva | | Forum regular Tom Barak has done an extensive guide on the map Anatolia. Included in this article are numerous pictures which detail exactly what Anatolia is all about. This guide's analysis on the map is worth the read! Here's an excerpt:
Now let's take a look at two typical game examples of how these ridges may be used for tactical advantage. In the picture directly below, note how by using small sections of wall (highlighted by white lines), this Eggie player has effectively used a ridge to protect their slingers and TC from an attacking squad of hoplites (blue circle). The Greek player must either walk all the way around to close with the slingers, must destroy the wall sections, or could use a transport ship to land behind the little section of wall nearest to the water. Either way, it's difficult and time and resource consuming to get at the Eggie's slingers. If you're still curious about the map, you might be interested in KS_Josey_Wales' Anatolia guide as well. |
| Guide to the Einherjar | | | Posted 3.27.2004 @ 8:15:PM by Socvazius | | ManticoreKiller has written a guide to one of the most popular myth units in the game, the Einherjar. The Norse's Classical age tank proved to be very powerful as was already expected, here's a bit from his tests:
"2. Group Test This test is basically to show what sort of impact the Einherjar's boost has. First, I sent up 3 Battle Boars against a TC (2800 hp). They took 35 seconds to destroy it. This is quite a common scenario for Norse players in heroic. Next, I added one Einherjar to the fray but not as a combat unit. I made sure it did not attack the TC but just boosted the Batlle Boars. With the boost working, the 3 Battle Boars took just 28 seconds to destroy the TC. This clearly shows the value of the Einherjar's boost effect on friendly units. In short, the more powerful the unit, the better the effect is." Feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of the great guides that the AoMH forumers have written? Well, Theris264 has made a compilation of all of the guides on the AoMH forums; the list is very extensive and you're sure to find an article you're interested in there. Take a look at it! |

| Age of Mythology Sales News | | | Posted 3.25.2004 @ 4:38:PM by Socvazius | | NPD Techworld released last week's PC game sales, and Age of Mythology - as expected - is on the list at number 4. Not too shabby, here's the list:
1 MS Flight Simulator 2004: Century Of Flight - Microsoft $46 2 Call Of Duty - Activision $49 3 Lord of the Rings: Return Of The King - Electronic Arts $20 4 MS Age Of Mythology - Microsoft $32 5 The Sims Deluxe - Electronic Arts $20 6 MS Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection - Microsoft $30 7 Hoyle Casino 2004 - Vivendi Universal $23 8 The Sims: Makin' Magic Expansion Pack - Electronic Arts $31 9 Rise Of Nations - Microsoft $36 10 Halo: Combat Evolved - Microsoft $41 But what really caught my eye was how high in rank AoM was in the sales for all of last month. Right up there at number 6, it's beating out big names like Battlefield 1942 and Warcraft 3. Pretty cool stuff!

| New Cherub 'Round These Parts... | | | Posted 3.24.2004 @ 10:22:PM by Socvazius | | Congratulations to our newest Cherub here at Heaven: Byzantine_Warrior. He'll be helping out with this in the scenario design section. Now, that little area has a bit of explaining I'll need to make; Cheezy monkey has decided to resign from his work here at AoMH and xLpx will be taking over as the Scenario Design Library admin, Byz will be helping him out in that work.
Congratulations, dude! |

| Forum Party Warstory! | | | Posted 3.23.2004 @ 4:38:PM by Socvazius | | Yeup, Flammifer has written his own warstory for last Saturday's forum party. I can't say much on it, so here's his account of what went on:
I wasn’t able to make it to a forum party for a few weeks but now that spring break is here I was really looking forward to some fun games. My favorite was a 3vs3 played on The Unknown (one very cool map_. The players were AoA_Liz (Isis), Orion_Joaquin (Ra) and VnX_Goten (Set) Vs Flammifer (Zeus), iceemaker (Gaia) and pansito (Isis).
"I was rather surprised when the game loaded to see the other team had one of each of the Egyptian major gods. That would make for a dozen free towers when they got to classical. Pansito has just played his first multiplayer game in a previous party game and managed to get a nice spot in the pocket position (in the middle and thus less likely to get rushed early). I figured the only good shot at winning would mean a boom. It went well except for the fact that I forgot to build a temple until I wanted to start advancing..." Take a look at the rest of the warstory to see how things turned out in the end, and be sure to check out the recorded game for this forum party game! |
| Poll Roundup | | | Posted 3.22.2004 @ 11:50:PM by Socvazius | | Last week's question of Which civ has the best MUs? got pretty spread out votes, though the Norse's myth units are the most preferred according to the poll. I can't say I disagree with Fire Giants, Fenris Wolves, and Krakens being pretty damn cool, because they definitely are.
30.0% (547 votes) Greeks 18.0% (328 votes) Egyptians 37.0% (675 votes) Norse 15.0% (273 votes) Atlanteans
Total: 1823 votes GloryofSparta has suggested this week's poll question: Will ES' next game be on the shelves this year? A lot of speculation has gone into ES' next game, but it's not entirely sure when it'll be released. What do you think? Answer in our poll! |
| Guide to Beating the AI at Hard | | | Posted 3.21.2004 @ 10:22:PM by Socvazius | | | Although for some it's not a very daunting task, those that are just getting accustomed to AoM and RTS games in general might find defeating the AI at the hard setting to be difficult. Well, Weezlwitz made me aware of a very detailed and long guide by Westwind.nu to doing just that, it should be able to help just about anyong having difficulties starting out with the game. Take a look at it if you need it, you should be able to get something out of it. |
| AoTSanctuary Clan League Survey | | | Posted 3.21.2004 @ 10:16:PM by Socvazius | | It's been announced by Lord Rivon that the AoT Sanctuary will be running a clan league, good news for any competitive clan in the community. Along with the announcement about the league, he asks anyone to fill out a survey so AoTS can best organize the ladder. Here's the scoop from the lord himself:
"Okay everyone, it’s official! AoTS will be running a clan league. We are hoping to make this the best and most user friendly league that has ever existed in AoM:TT.
To do this we need you, the community, to help us. Below is a survey that should be proven interesting enough to fill out. Its importance is virtuous for this entire league is because of you. Note that the competition will be starting in no more than a month, so look out for it!
The projected is being headed up by Finch and myself, so if you have any queries about anything to do with the league, you can ask us; I’m probably better to ask as Finch is a very busy man. Once you have filled in this survey you can either email it to me or PM it, or if you wish just reply to this topic.
I can be reached at lordrivon@hotmail.com, my msn account is the same. Feel free to contact me about anything concerning the league. |
| Update on Problems with nVidia Drivers and Units Appearing Black | | | Posted 3.21.2004 @ 8:49:PM by Socvazius | | | Quircus made a small update in his Tech forum thread offering a fix to the problem that some people with nVidia Drivers and units in AoM appearing black; the latest 56.64 drivers apparently work as well, so you should get those as soon as possible if you're still having that problem or haven't fixed it yet. |
| Battlefield Briefing | | | Posted 3.20.2004 @ 11:18:PM by Sunshine | | This past week has been pretty uneventful, as news lately seems to be slow these days. Regardless, there have been some interesting topics in the community lately, including Theris264 speculations for a theoretical Roman civilization in an Age of Mythology 2; as well as another of ChimeraArtemis's excellent guides, this time on the Automation: the fairly cheap, massable Myth Unit which has the unique ability to heal and repair others of its kind.
Although news has been slow lately, the AoM designer's community is still going strong, with several projects that are looking pretty impressive - including the much anticipated projects: The Warriors of Sparta, Siege of Atlantis, and the Kings of Mythology. Together, with the release of several excellent mods, the scenario design community has been pretty active this past week.
What's coming up next week, well for one, Socvazius shall be returning from his trip to BHG in Baltimore, (bringing back some excellent coverage for RoNH). Other then that, there will likely be some new guides, new scenarios and other events happening throughout the community. Be sure to stay tuned for the latest AoM news coverage for next week.
That's it for this week, see you on the battlefield! |
| A Guide to the Automaton | | | Posted 3.20.2004 @ 9:09:PM by Shiva | | After a brief break from making guides, ChimeraArtemis is at it again. This time, he chose the Automaton, a fairly cheap, massable Myth Unit which has the unique ability to heal and repair others of its kind. Artemis goes into minute detail about every aspect of Automaton, right down to the speed they repair with and the technologies that affect them. Here's an excerpt from the article:
Automatons are cheap. That's their main strong point. You could practically call them human soldiers in terms of their pop space. They are not mega-powerful classical units like the Cyclops or Sphinx, but don't be fooled that they are as weak as some say they are. If you're going Leto, Automatons will be the only offensive thing you have: No free heroes, no healing and no military techs. Automatons can be used effectively, but once your opponent sees you advance through Leto, you can expect the heroes to be around the corner.
Saying that, if kept away from heroes, Automatons can stand they're ground pretty well. Defending from Raiding Calvary and Hippikons works very well, and keeping 3 of them at your base can be useful to keep attackers away. |

Welcome to yet another installment of, 'The AoMH Forum Party!' Last week we had an assortment of maps to choose from for the theme, but this week we're adding a tad bit of... mystery. Yep, that's right, the theme for this week is The Unknown, (or Land Unknown)! With dozens upon dozens of potential maps to play on, the Unknown and Land Unknown open up a titanic amount of strategies and tactics that will make for some spectacular battles. Be sure to come on out and play! I Hope to see you there!

| The Designer's Guild Community Update | | | Posted 3.18.2004 @ 11:31:PM by Kumar Shah | | For this week we first start with this great screen of a Huge Citadel. The screenshot is straight out of his upcoming scenario and I would certainly be looking forward to playing it.
That is not the only scenario worth waiting for, L_J_C is working on his campaign called The Warriors of Sparta. Check his showcase out to see the storyline and see come good screens. Alongside we also have Skycat's Siege of Atlantis which is also worth a look and very closed to being finished.
Angel xLpx made a post in the AI/RMS/Modding forum asking designers to contribute towards the AoMH Scenario Design Library. If you are intrested in getting your article featured on AoMH e-mail them to HG_xLpx@hotmail.com.
Talking of him, the Kings of Mythology project he started has had some more concept models completed. They are the Billmen, Archer and the Swordsman. Keep in mind these are not the final models and will probably undergo changes when the final mod is released.
waveslave, a quite wellknown modder has made an excellent post and one of our first mod making guide. Check out the guide to make Quality Mods.
That's it for this week. Next week hopefully we will see some more tutorials added to the Library and also showcase some great new projects. Sionara!! |
| Roman Civilization in AoM2 Speculations | | | Posted 3.17.2004 @ 10:36:PM by Socvazius | | Theris264 has created a very detailed thread on a theoretical Roman civilization in an Age of Mythology 2. The thread has several of the possible units, gods, and anything else about the civilization; it has also sparked a pretty good amount on conversation on the subject. Better check it out! Here is his blurb on favor gathering for the Romans:
Heroes For each 5 killed units, Romans may turn one Legionnaire, Praetorian, Amazon or Cataphract into a hero; they only may have half the number of their Legionnaires, Praetorians, Amazons or Cataphracts turned into a hero at a time, but those heroes are very strong. Rewarding or punishing soldiers for their actions on the battlefield was very common in the Roman army: the first soldier to climb over enemy city-walls, obtained a laurel wreath, while of a whole company that had acted cowardly during a battle, each tenth man was killed (decimating). |
| AoM Number 4 | | | Posted 3.16.2004 @ 11:25:PM by Socvazius | | Yeup, unsurprisingly, Age of Mythology is in the top 10 list. However, what is surprising is the sudden appearance of Rise of Nations, which is likely selling so well (at number 3) because the upcoming release of its expansion pack. Geesh, I really need to get my hands on NWN: Hordes of the Underdark; go Drow, Duegar, and especially bunnies! ;-)

| Poll Roundup | | | Posted 3.15.2004 @ 11:38:PM by Socvazius | | According to the poll Do you think Atlantis really existed? people apparently believe that Atlantis at least existed, though they disagree on how advanced it was when it was around. Interesting, here are the poll results:
15.7% (260 votes) Definitely 24.7% (409 votes) Yes, but not as advanced as some think 11.6% (192 votes) I don't know 10.5% (174 votes) Definitely not!

| Battlefield Briefing | | | Posted 3.14.2004 @ 1:54:PM by Socvazius | | This past week was pretty slow, though Ensemble did post a very interesting article on the Calgary Flames' visit to the studios. I wonder just how good the teamwork was from the hockey team in their AoK:TC games, it'd certainly be fun to play with those guys. Perhaps more sports teams are ES fans? That would be pretty awesome, and it wouldn't surprise me at all; who couldn't like the games?
The only other big news was the ending of the MAD Revolution Tournament. the eXcalibur clan sweeped the top 3 ranks, with Skipper, RiveRo, and Hope getting those spots; Skipper of course getting first place. Congratulations guys, and thanks to MAD for holding such a well-run tournament!
What's coming next week? Well, I don't think we'll see anything in particular here at AoMH, but I'm gonna be going on a trip to Big Huge Games in Baltimore (the home of AoMH's former webmaster, Thunder) this next weekend; you're sure to see a lot of cool stuff from RoNH following that trip.
That's it for this week, see you on the battlefield! |
| Guide to the Valkyrie | | | Posted 3.13.2004 @ 9:43:PM by Socvazius | | ManticoreKiller posted his first guide to a Norse myth unit, the healing Valkyrie. Like all of his past guides, it goes over the unit's basic bonuses and how it fares against other units. Here's an excerpt from it:
You really don't need any suggestions to say that this unit must be used for its healing. Combat wise-
vs Greeks- Use along with RC for raiding tackling Toxotes. Also very good vs Hippkons and the Greek MUs. Massacres Centaurs. vs Norse- Excellent counter for the RC. One Valkyrie can take 5 RC with no problems. Also excellent against Throwing Axeman and Huskarls. vs Egyptians- Only use with human backup to take care of priests with. Still, they are useful vs Axeman, Slingers, CA and even War Elephants. vs Atlanteans- One more MU that is great to use vs Turmae. Also good vs Katpeltes (they do not get any bonus vs Valks) Arcus and Chieroballistae. Weak attie MUs will fall like ninepins against them. They only have problems vs Mythic MUs. |

| The Designer's Guild Community Update | | | Posted 3.11.2004 @ 9:57:AM by Kumar Shah | | Some new projects were announced this week one the forums many dealing with horror and mystery stories. One was Cabin 13 by waveslave610 while EazY_Ben showcased Count Dracula. It would be fun to see how these designers implement their stroylines using the AoM editor.
The eyecandy thread saw some great new screens posted by different people. Some of the noteable ones were King Jared's screen of The southern colony of the Atlantean Remnant. and Jonny Cartooney design of a Camp for Byzantine Warrior's upcoming scenario - Shilmista : Hellscape.
The Kings of Mythology Mod which attempts to recreate Age of Kings into AoM finished their design of the European Spearman. You can view this work here.
That's it for now but I will be back next week with more news. |
| Hockey Team Invades ES | | | Posted 3.10.2004 @ 11:51:PM by Socvazius | | Thanks to my buddy OleGerm from PAoM for this news: a Canadian hockey team, the Calgary Flames (big AoK:TC fans, interestingly enough), apparently visited Ensemble Studios just recently. During the visit, they played a number of games with the ensemble guys. It looks like it was a heck of a lot of fun, according to the article at the ES official site:
With four archery ranges already built, he adds a second TC. Moments later, he sends his first 15 cav archers over deep into TheMoonGoat's base, in response to MoonGoat's earlier flare. Then the talking starts:
The Sheriff: “Where are they?”
TheMoonGoat: “What?”
The Sherriff: “I'm here, where are they?”
TheMoonGoat: “Oh, I just flared to let you know where I was.”
The Sheriff: [non-verbal sounds]
So, the Sheriff has just wasted two minutes responding to an imagined attack. His score is now 2900, while all the other players are below 1700. Time for some action. Be sure to take a look at the rest of the article, it's a fun read. |
| AoM Number 3 | | | Posted 3.9.2004 @ 11:49:PM by Socvazius | | ...yet again. Looks like it's back up there, I wonder when this streak will end. Maybe it'll end up outselling Warcraft 3 over time; that'd be pretty cool indeed. Here's the top 10 sales list from NPD Techworld:

| Poll Roundup | | | Posted 3.8.2004 @ 8:07:PM by Socvazius | | It looks like Hand of the Pharaoh is the favorite new TT technology according to the poll Which new TT technology is the most useful? The Egyptian technology that increases the usefulness of Priests quite a bit with a longer range and the ability to pick up relics is indeed a useful technology, as it let the Egyptians compete for relics in the early game instead of having their only relic-gatherer empowering a building. The fact that it's cheap makes it even better. Here are the results:
26.2% (327 votes) Beast Slayer 14.3% (179 votes) Axe of Muspell 42.8% (535 votes) Hand of the Pharaoh 16.7% (208 votes) Heroic Fleet

| MAD Revolution Tournament Ends | | | Posted 3.7.2004 @ 12:41:AM by Socvazius | | | The MAD Revolution Tournament has just ended, with the eX clan sweeping the top three spots: Skipper, RiveRo, and Hope getting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The tournament was run pretty well, as eX_Aetius said "this was one of the most enjoyable and well run AoM tournaments I've witnessed." Not too shabby at all, especially considering how many tournaments Aetius has participated in. Nice job MAD, and congratulations to the winners! |
| Guide to the Cyclops | | | Posted 3.6.2004 @ 11:22:PM by Socvazius | | ManticoreKiller has another myth unit guide for us, this one covering the big one-eyed Cyclops. It turns out to be a rather expensive yet powerful unit, though at its most powerful in situations where it's outclassed by later-age units. Interesting stuff, here's an excerpt:
1. vs Infantry - 1 Zeus Hoplite (126hp 10 hack damage 41% hack armour)l: First of all, the Cyclops normal attack takes two forms. First, it has an underarm swing of the club which it does about once a second. Second, it has an overhead swat which it does once every two seconds. Which shot it uses is random and though they might do varying amounts of damage per shot, they will do the same damage on a per second basis. To cut a long story short the cyclops kills the hoplite in 15 seconds finishing with 570hp. For an Elder Cyclops, the story is the same- only shorter. It takes just 10 seconds to kill the hoplite with 600 hp left. I disabled the special for this test. |

| Forum Party Tomorrow! | | | Posted 3.5.2004 @ 4:58:PM by Socvazius | | Forum Party Guide
Valley of the Kings is a very interesting map from the original Age of Mythology. Terrain-wise it's pretty normal, with a decent amount of game and forests covering a fairly flat desert with a couple ponds and such mottling the landscape. However, what sets it apart from the other maps is the fact that there are neutral midgol fortresses also mottling the landscape, making early expansion into other gold mines difficult at best. As a result, it's a pretty good map for some fun mutliplayer games and will be this week's forum party theme. Have fun with it!
12PM EST / 9PM EST (Timezone Table) in General Chat 4, and the forum party thread is up. |
| 411mania.com Reviews TT | | | Posted 3.5.2004 @ 4:40:PM by Socvazius | | 411mania has written up a review of The Titans on their website; the review is actually rather interesting to read, as it is pretty blunt and amusing at the same time. As a result, it sounds like the review was written by a real, down to earth gamer just talking to his buddies about the game he just played. Although it seems like the reviewer liked the game quite a bit, he gave it a 7.5 out of 10. Nonetheless, that's not too bad of a score; here's a snip:
The 411 .::. This is an great game, with lots of fun to be hand in both single, and multiplayer. Without the Titans expansion pack, it would get a lower score, however the Titans add a whole new dimension to the game. It's your standard RTS.....just a hell of a lot better. Pick both up today. The only hinderance, which gives it a lower score, is the popuation limits. |
| GameSpy Title Fight: AoK Loses to WC3 | | | Posted 3.4.2004 @ 10:56:PM by Socvazius | | | Unfortunately, Age of Kings lost to Warcraft 3 35% to 65% in GameSpy's Title Fight. It didn't do that well, but then again it could've done worse. Now that Age of Kings is out of the way, Warcraft 3 is against its cousin Starcraft for the next matchup. It'll be interesting to see who comes out on top, I'm rooting for Starcraft, there's not much (not even WC3, in my opinion) that can beat the memorable qualities of Blizzard's sci-fi RTS game; you just can't forget such dynamic and interesting characters as Kerrigan, Raynor, or Tassadar. |

So be sure to support the Age series by giving Age of Kings a vote in the poll and letting it advance to the next round! |
| Poll Roundup | | | Posted 3.1.2004 @ 11:51:PM by Socvazius | | According to the poll Do you see yourself playing AOM in a years time?, the majority of voters think that they'll be playing AoM in a years time...and maybe even beyond that. That's pretty good for the game and community; to keep things going as long as they can. Here are the results:
66.8% (884 votes) Yes 16.3% (216 votes) No 16.8% (223 votes) No idea
Total: 1324 votes The Titans introduced 4 new technologies to the existing civilizations to help balancing things out or just make the game more interesting. Thanks to Eye of Iperion for the suggestion: Which new TT technology is the most useful? Axe of Muspell? Beast Slayer? Answer in our poll! |
