I see flawed logic, i do! Imagine my spearmen and slingers VS your hippikons & toxotes.
Standard battle:
Hippikons and Spears charge. Toxotes target spears, spears get slaughtered, hippikons continue on to wipe out slingers. We've all seen this happen before.
Improved battle:
Hippikons and Spears charge. Slingers also move in to engage the toxotes with the new auto-target feature. In most cases, the toxes will wipe the spearmen before they deal substantial damage to the cav, and the slingers will deal severe damage to the toxotes. So now its slingers vs hippikons. I wonder who's gonna win that one.
Standard battle with better tactics:
Hippikons and Spears charge. Slingers circle the combat and stand nose to nose with the toxotes. Now, not only do the slingers target the toxes, but the toxes also waste their fire on the high pierce armour of the slingers. You've just turned the problem to your advantage.
The enemy now has two choices: Turn with the hippikons, double-teaming the slingers and leaving your spears unchecked, in which case you end up slaughtering his cav and do critical damage to his archers as well. Alternatively he fights on, leaving him with both his units fighting nose to nose with their counters. Either way, you win.
I fully understand that this is easier said than done, but if you try you'll get the hang of it. It works best when you deploy your counter-archers to the side of your melee force, instead of behind it, as then they have plenty of room to manuever around the main battle.
War doesn't decide who's right. It only decides who's left.
