My old system that worked even in 4v4 games believe it or not:
Win2k
p800
ATI Radeon32
512kRAM
21" Nokia Flat Screen CRT
Played at 1280X1024 (with high grfx setting) and had to play in window mode to avoid pointer lag and flicker. A strange refresh bug would not repaint the screen under the pointer in window mode, but this was only slightly annoying and much better than a flickering pointer that lagged.
The key thing that allowed me to run in big games was turning footsteps OFF! I routinely played in 4v4 and even some 5v5.
I just bought this system:
WinXP
2.53Ghz
ATI Radeon 9700
2000FP 20.1" LCD
1Gig RAM
Needless to say, I have turned footsteps back on, and this new system dows not have pointer lag so I don't have to play in window mode. I play in 1600x1200x32
On thing about XP though is I do not like the control panel tweeks for the mouse. First of all, I had to turn sensitivity all the way up to the top level (I had it about halfway with Win2k) so the mouse moves faster. Also it does not have a way to set acceleration of mouse to medium/low/high. It has this thing called smartmove or something like that and is either ON or OFF which I do not like. I set it on or else you cannot make precise single pixel adjustments. IF this setting is turned off your mouse jumpes several pixels at a time with a small movement.
Anyway, I wish there was a way to get the exact same feel as I did with the mouse in Win2k, but it is "close enough" now anyway, but there is no more room for adjustment to make it faster, which would help my game more I think. I play with mouse sensitivity all the way up in AOM. I wonder if there is a way to set it even higher than the gui allows you to set it in game. That would be nice to set it even higher.

P.S. for you guys with older systems, the cheapest thing to improve performance is to get at least 512k RAM in your system. I found that getting more RAM was more important than a faster processor for multiplayer games, especially larger ones. I would always outperform my buddies who had 1.7Ghz processors with only 256k RAM when I had only a p800 with 512k RAM.
