Once upon a time, long ago, a bunch of top Age players couldn't find games in rated, because everyone was scared to play them - so the players involved made names like Papa_Smurf, Happy_Smurf, etc - and proceeded to find games that way instead. That's roughly how it came about; later it's come to mean simply playing on a different alias than your standard one (and generally at a somewhat lower level than normal).
