Is there a way in single player mode to have open diplomacy like there was in AoK and AoE, i.e. being able to set your relations towards your opponents and have dynamic alliances?

As my original message stated, I am asking about single player mode.

No further responses on this? Is the conclusion that you can't have other than Locked Teams in Singleplayer mode? That's a step back from the earlier games. Maybe it will be added in The Titans?

I tried setting up a single player game using me and computer opponents on my LAN but it was more sluggish than normal single player (even though I wasn't using another PC). I'll just deal with the game the way it was designed, or maybe try it on ESO, though I don't think it would be any faster than a LAN game.

For some reason, I don't think playing Lightning will speed up the performance of the multiplayer code, but maybe I'm missing something. What exactly is Lightning anyway? I tried Deathmatch and didn't really like it because you automatically were given all your techs.
