Stupid question, I know, but I just really don't know.

In AoK it was armour that protects against pierce attacks, that is, Archers, Hand Cannons, Skirms, Scorpions, Towers, Castles...all that stuff. Regular armour protected against everything else except for Onagers, Trebs, CG's and BC's...

It protects your units from missile weapons. (arrows, spears, ballista bolts etc)

EG. An archer (which does 5 damage) shoots a knight (which has 2 pierce armour). Knight takes 3 damage.

if its done by simple subtraction, then how come rams take ANY damage from arrows?

siege rams = 195 pierce armor

no archer has ANY attack 196 or above

What exactly was pierce armour in real life and how did it differ between regular armour?

It's just a gameplay thing that allows a unit like a Huskarl to kick archer butt but then gets butchered by melee units. I suppose there are historical examples of something like this, but it's mainly a gameplay thing.

I think that armor worn as clothing was effetcive in hand-to-hand combat, but shields offered more protection from arrow fire as the arrows stuck in them, not in your armor- but don't quote me.

Not all old men in ragged coats are bad old men; some are bone-and-bottle men, and have little dogs of their own, some are gardeners, and a few, a very few, are wizards prowling around on a holiday looking for something to do.
