Systems administrator. So you were pretty close. My job comprises everything from replacing defective printers over network and firewall administration to programming an SAP system.

Sometimes you need to scare the lambs, tell tales of evil bad wolves. Because if there is nothing to fear, they might think for themselves.

My friend says he wants to be a system administrator because you dont do anything. Don't take offence to that I'm just saying what my friend said. Could you clarify what you really do and if it is really "easy"?

Well, you need a good deal of knowledge if for instance you want to set up a firewall so that your company network is protected from outside intruders while at the same time your corporate users can access the internet with as little restrictions as possible. We also have a number of WAN connections here (connections to remote branch offices). The connections must be encrypted for security, and they must be stable. When a user from the remote office calls you and tells you he can no longer work because network connection is down, then you need to find out why. You also need to implement a backup connection that you can activate if your regular provider has a longer-lasting outage or has difficulties finding the cause of the problem. These are just a few examples.
If you are doing the job properly, a large part of it comprises creating proper documentation. You will find yourself writing lots of documents that describe in detail how your company is organized and how certain problems are solved. This is necessary so that someone else can replace you if you are ill, on vacancies - or have left the company for good.
So you need to be creative finding solutions, and you need a vast knowledge. The actual work is not always that much when everything is running smoothly - but your friend better does not expect that this job is easy to learn.
Of course there are also some incompetent systems administrators that call for external help with every little problem. This of course creates a lot of costs, and there is no proper know-how and planning in the company in that case.
