So they are not really used until it is going to be a long game? They dont use it every now and then to get just enough resource for that palace or something?

They start pretty much as soon as they can get a market up, but just a few caravans. In a 20+ min game though its not uncommon to see a stream of caravans. Of course they also put the distance as far as possible for the most income of gold, but you need to consider the safety of the route too. Trade can out produce gatherers and you can either (once the mines are gone or unreachable) put them to work , build lots of towers, migdols, walls, etc, or use them in attacks. You just have to judge your population and resource requirements and availibility.

For caravans yes, but I've never seen experts use them to trade resources before.
