Hi I play AoE3 and a member on the Heaven Forums. I was just looking at this game online and have seen how cheap you can get it for, alot of people I know choose to play this instead of AoE3 even though they have both, they believe this is the better game. So I thought I might as well give this game a go, even if I don't play it it can only make me a better player. Because I play strictly online on AoE3 I was wondering what the online community is like? On AoE you can expect a maximum of around 4000 on weekends, around 3200 most nights and around 800~ at it's minimum. Any stats help is appreciated

Welcome!
This game has like 2200 people at peak times, around 1800 at normal nights, but can get as low as 200 people at it's minimum. This means you can always find a game, especially if you live in the right timezone.
I also own both AoE3 and AoM by the way, but AoM is more fun, the civs are unique, and the scenarios will help you spend time if you ever get tired from Supremacy, Lightning, Deatchmatch or Conquest.
(I am not talking about the RMS you have at AoE3, I mean real scenarios created in the editor).

Thanks for the quick reply! Sounds like a good game, I'll probably see if I can find a demo first but it only costs £8 from an online shop which is preety cool .
Oh just remembered about the X-Pack - Titans. Is this worth getting as well as Myth, thanks?

just get gold edition so you get AOM and AOMT:TT together.
I've never onced been in a situation on AOM were i can't find a game, or start my own and it never fill up. It will obviously be a smaller community that AOE3, but its a good community.
AOM like many RTS isn't perfect on balance but in my opinion its better than AOE3 where ES just keep switching round the power of the civs, one days in german then spanish, french, english, german again i just gave up trying to work out what i should be bothered about the most.
AOM's scenario editor has the same layout as AOE3 however most of the triggers that are broke in AOE3 work in AOM, It also has a far larger scenario dessign support netwrok, with lots of editor patches and new triggers, including a recent addition called the "transform all units on map" trigger, which among other things lets you change the projectiles of units (catapults firing chickens, archers firring huge bolders )
Hope to see you round AOMH more in the future

hey musket! You will recognise me from aoe3h, im also a regular here. edited, as i actually gave an answer to a question you didnt ask :P Hope to see you online on aom. My username is in my sig.
One of the good things about aom is that you can create as many accounts as you like. This is good and bad, as you often get smurfed, and good if you want to restart from 1600, or have different accounts for playing rated games with different civs etc etc.

Well this is something you don't see every day, an AoE3 players switching to AoM rather than the other way around. lol. IMO Age of Mythology > AoE3. As dark dude said about not being as creative with guns, I think you have much more freedom in the AoM editor, you can make a more fantasyish scenario similar to LoTR. Myth units make the game more fun in general, god powers too. I prefer the genre over the historical based ones. Glad to hear an AoE3er is giving AoM a go. Hopefully you'll notice some of the eastereggs that make it such a fantastic game.
I never asked for this.

I don't think that a game will make you a better player if you do not play it. That being said, you will not regret trying out AoM.

Wait, wait, wait! If you live in austalia (if you don't skip the rest of this paragraph) especially in the Brisbane to sydney area (if you arn't skip the rest of this paragraph). then when you're mostly free, as in from 4pm - 8 (or 9)pm you will find it hard to get a scenario that you like. As this time is when ESO is at it's minimum. If you want to have a good game and not wait past 15mins to get a game that you like started, get up at 6am and play until 8am.
If not, lucky you have fun and enjoy! ~ Steak

i find early afternoon is ok ususally. its just around 5ish that its really bad.
I thought about upgrading to a Athlon 64 X2 with the new "Brisbane" core. Perhaps I should think again if it will make me lonely on ESO?

lol dap, perhaps they'll bring out one thats 2x faster (not to mention cooler) called sydney.
Well, coolness sure is a strength of the Brisbane core. It is the first Athlon 64 X2 to be manufactured in 65nm structure, which makes everything smaller and therefore produces less heat (65 Watts maximum). The older Windsor core, which is still being produced as well, is 90nm and outputs up to 125 Watts of heat. Only the special "EE" (Energy Efficient) variant of it is also 65 Watts maximum.

Yep. Why would one play a game where wasting time mindlessly clicking buttons instead of directing real battles is necessary to win the game?

Concerning that, AOE3 is a step back to the vanilla level of AoM. But well, the online community asked for it by whining about the introduction of the valuable aq feature. Perhaps ES should offer an optional patch for AoM in which caravans do not move back and forth between market and TC on automatic, but must manually ordered from TC to market and back for every single run. Would be great for those that think that such stupid work is micro and improves the game.

if it was mindless, then i wouldnt be forgetting to do it would i? You could say i was mindlessly neglecting to queue settlers manually if you will...? You are probably missing the whole nature of an RTS. Eco is a big part of the game, and it is not a chore or something you should feel like it is a burden. it is as important; actually more important than your military control. If these are your thoughts then why arent you playing something like Total War???

We should all switch to Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. Such an old game, how I miss it. As for AOE3 lets kill it. They should make AOM2, or SWGBG2.

again, rather than your battle being micro, it would just be all there was; hence, why arent you playing total war?

It's nothing compared to checking you TC every few seconds.
A game I like needs to have some sort of econ that you control. With AQ its good enough. Same for troop production. It's easier to monitor your troop composition with AQ too.

You are missing the point, scriv. Making decisions in realtime is fun. Doing stupid routine work is not.
Ordering a vill and then turning on aq is the decision to start continuous production of vills. This is a decision, and there is only a small amount of work related to it. (It would be silly not to do it at game start, but it is a decision nonetheless, and later, when you are running low on pop, you may well decide to stop it in, say, heroic age, but restart in mythic when you have been raided or are piling up for ragnarok.) However, returning to your TC every 30 secs to order more vills manually holds no additional decision. It is just work that you do to make sure that your decision "Continuously train vills" is properly executed. AoM is a RTS game, so speed is of the essence, but you want to spend your time making decisions and real battle micro (where you try to outmicro your opponent in a direct confrontation) rather than executing your own decisions in your home base because the game is too silly to do it for you after you have issued precise orders.
It is just like the caravans. It was your decision to train a caravan and spend food and pop space on it. But when you have it, you do not want to have to order it back and forth between market and TC manually. It is obvious that this is what you trained it for (since caravans have no other use), so you want your computer to do this routine work for you while you focus on what is fun. You only give the strategic order which of your TCs your market should send his newly-built caravans to (by setting up a rally point once for your market).
As far as Total War is concerned:
It does include econ, but on a far more primitive level. And in Rome, you can set a lot of economic details to automatic. The reason why I do not do so is because I have no faith in my governor cretins. A matter of programming quality.
It is not RTS (except the battles, but these are but a fraction of the game, and not a really good fraction either, IMHO).
It (at least Rome) is not multiplayer-capable either (except the battles, but again, they are not the real game).
Darkness is a state of mind Valor is the contempt of Death and Pain. (Tacitus) Problems worthy of attack prove their worth by hitting back. (Piet Hein)
