I think that we can assume that even with those features, the game will be tile based.
Battle realms was like that - you could set buildings at different angles and completely remove the concept of straight lines fromt the game - yet it was all tile based. A building still occupied the same number of tiles no matter which way it faced.
AoM might be the same; or it might be that rotating buildings to make things less angular is a scenario design feature only - which would make sense.
