Don't use the autoqueue if you want to improve.
I take it that you're planning on beating Hard/Titan opponents (or real humans). Autoqueue is strictly better than not having it, but it really doesn't teach you the basics you need to know how to win.
To win in RTS, you have to use your resources (obviously at higher levels, you have to use your resources well).
Keep your villagers active. Concentrate on this if you have any idle villagers. If you build any buildings, you can shift+click your villagers back to food or wood or gold.
Keep your TCs active and keep your military buildings pumping. If you have inactive buildings, you built too many buildings (the resources you used to build the building could have gone to building more troops).
Keep your resource count down. If your resource count starts to climb over 500 in any one category, build more buildings and start cranking out more troops, getting upgrades, or something. Extra resources DO NOT DO ANYTHING to help you. Even if you're building something you don't "need," it's better than not using the resources. Obviously if you're trying to age up, that's an exception.
Raiding is cool, but it requires more experience in how the game works. When you get good, you'll do it every game, but mistakes while raiding can cost you a lot. Your opponent will generally have a TC and towers to stop your raid, so if you stop paying attention to your raiders, they'll all die, leaving you worse off than before.
Before you move on to beating Hard opponents, you should be at least proficient in Raiding (and doing it consistently), but the number 1 thing is still using all of the resources that you get.
