Please list any you can come up with, and explain why many serious players can never reliably pass 1750.

Some don't do that because they only play one god I think o_O

There are many things but some examples from my experience:
In eggywars: after the initial early heroic warfare (ra scarab rushes, isis strikes back with a/e fe) a 1750 eggy pops out with military, while a 18+ turns of mig and siege aq in time and eventually pops out with civ units and outbooms the 1750
Ra vs Norse: 1750s dont priest rush, 18+ do (on the right maps)
18+ also adapt to other aspect from the map than just high hunt/low hunt/water, fe: small maps => earlier adv, priest rushes etc, big maps => later adv, more booming, makin fast units (fe no early ellies on oasis unless one forward builds)
@ excess: huh? playin other gods then your main is waste of time if you want to get 18+ asap

Idk..most 1800s I know play random god or at least more than one god while the 1750s play only one god.
As you know, it helps you know other god's weaknesses better...When I play vs Eggy they seem so good but when I play them myself...they are the hardest civ to play (at least for me)

yeah, your post is a bit depressing. It suggests no matter how hard one practices/theorizes, without certain talent, one can never pass 1750. I see some truth in this, as I can recall a number of players in similar condition.

Its all about confidence! Naw, but i got this game mid 2008, and i used to just go to 3v3s in adv for prob a good half a year. That was probably the biggest waste of time. When i wanted to go be competitive 1v1, I was too dependent and not aggressive enough and couldn't even pull above 1650 even though i said my rr was 170~ in adv games lol. Since then, my rate is around 1730s just by fixing up my BOs and arranging my eco more proportional to the units i make/ play isis. Anyways, i think it is harder to get 18+ nowadays then it was a few years ago due to much more competition, so a 1750 right now may have been a 18++ back in 2004/2005. That might make you feel better no?
Also, i notice that what separates alot of 175 and 180 players is that the 1800 would make much more room for seige, especially late game where some players would turn off aq, to make sure that they can have a large pop of seige units which a 170 who only has an army of CA would lose so quickly

i agree. Once you get above a certain rating, every player knows how to counter the usual bs isis does and will totally destroy you if your a one trick "fh a/e" pony.

Its been a while since I was 1750 (ie couple years w/ both gaia and isis), but for me it was mostly mouse reaction and control skills. I am sure for each person there is a different obstacle. Now I play much less often, and less seriously.

It is easier to improve your strategy, but hard to imporve your multi-tasking skill, reacation time, and temperament, although these things get better if you practice more.
