discuss?

personally, besides the obvious of starcraft having a strong playerbase, i think the main reason is because there weren't consistant updates for aom.

Probably cause this games has less multiplayer replayability, and imbalanced

Not enough micromanagement.

A battle usually consists of two forces right clicking on eachothers army and then whoever has the better units wins. Also myth unit abilities are auto casted.

In starcraft you have to use each ability yourself which means that a pro with a small force can decimate a noob's large force.

The most important things in a game of aom is how well you manage your economy and what units you build/upgrade. Since battle is not one of the most skill-testing areas of the game it is easy to become repetitive.

It'd be more popular if the redistributors had rights to distribute unique CD-keys. Not more popular than other games, just in general.

Yeah, the whole ubisoft/valusoft distributing thousands of CDs of the same copy of the game was just retarded and prevented the expansion of the online community while it was still in a position where it could grow.

Okay there is some strategy in battle. It mainly consists of what units you target and perhaps flanking but in general it's not of great consequence. It is possible to create situations where players need to use micro (e.g. The Situation Room).

I'm talking about a game of supremacy, if one player is micromanaging with small forces and the other player is improving his economy, the player micromanaging will have no chance against the larger, stronger forces. The main strategy is what units you build and not how you use them.

I wouldn't say there's not enough civs. Look at starcraft there's only three. But i think the units in each civ are too similar.

Well guys, there is also the fact that this game was MUCH more popular about 6 years ago. I regularly remember seeing 4500-5000 players on ESOat any given time. Several dozen players were rated 2k and above. Since then, they've either moved on to AoE3 or left gaming all together.

However, like all Age games, AoM will never be truly dead. People still play AoE, and it's 13 years old or something.

warcraft is not a true rts so it cannot really be compared. even in the regular ladder games it is more of a rpg. as far as the custom games(same goes for aom) there is very little rts. most people play the custom games so really the rts aspect is not very popular at all

W/e AoM owns.

It's basically the same thing as star trek TOS which was never very popular when it was released, it only had a small cult following

Although it makes me sad to think that at any given time, Socom fireteam bravo 2 for the PSP has about the same amount of people online.

I think a big thing is reputation also. Blizzard is usually ranked as the second greatest, or greatest, developer team of all time(the other being Bioware). Ensemble did a lot for RTS games but they don't have the reputation that Blizzard does.

Wow I can't imagine AoM/TT with having 4500-5000 ppl on

I started playing AoT online in November 2007 so there was the same situation as now...

When I played a bit of AoE3 around April/May 07 there were approx. 5000 ppl on... (I really liked it back then but since I play AoT online there's no need for me to play AoE3 and I don't like it anymore anyways.)

Well to give an answer to the question:

I know this game since it came out but I didn't play it online back then so I can't really say what was done wrong but the issue with bad support from ESO seems right to me.

tbh if blizzard made aom2 everyone would latch on to it and play it to death.

Thank God SCII finally has a release date but it so so damn far away...
