Set up a trade route, wall off choke points, and put 2 towers behind each choke point and near your market

Alot of the times I will forward build, favoring one side of the map and run trade from my FB to my main TC.

In about 90% of the games i play i don't even require a market. You should always stick with gold mines if you can because building a trade route is pretty costly on food. If you're unable to secure a few gold mines early in the game and you have to create a trade because you're starting to run out of gold then the game will be over soon anyway. If you need to build a trade early in heroic you'll never be able to keep pushing back your opponent who has a lot more resources than you because he didn't have to waste thousands of food on a trade route.
Another problem a trade route has is that it's hard to defend against raiders. If a group of raiders manages to take out your market then all of your trade carts will walk to your tc. If you rebuild your market and want to start your route again then you'll probably end up sending all of your carts (usually about 25-30 if you don't have miners left) to the market and they'll walk in eachothers way until some of them go idle. Basically, if your enemy manages to destroy your market you'll be without any means of gold income for a long time and it'll require attention from you to keep all the idle trade carts moving.
If you end up playing a very long game, usually a 3V3 then you'll most likely require a trade route. If you're playing on a map like watering hole you won't have any problem defending the route. By simply putting a few walls up between the choke points you'll be 100% safe (unless he builds docks). In other maps like Savannah you should simply try to keep pressure on your opponent so he can't afford to send units to your market/eco to raid you.

When aging heroic i instantly create a market too, but not to make a trade route, just in case i get spare resources to age mythic. When building a real trade route i set up about 3 markets so i can quickly create the entire route. Otherwise you'd be waiting for ages to get your trade route up which is especially annoying when you're out of gold mines.
I stick to my point, if you age heroic and instantly start creating a trade route you'll lack so much offensive power that your enemy will easily be able to defeat you.

"just in case i get enough res. to go mythic"
you dont know whether your economy will let you be able to go mythic or not? you need to work a lot on strategy and economy, and not in theory, in actual gameplay

I don't have anything against a good trade route, it's a great supply for gold. If you however have several safe gold mines and a good ammount of villagers mining gold there's no need for a trade route at all. When you hit heroic you should build more tc's asap to boom your economy. If you use market you'll be spending twice the ammount of food. This soon in the game food is critical. If the enemy fh's against you and he has siege you won't have enough food for infantry to take that siege down.
Even if you'd only create a trade cart when you have plenty of food or if you're sure you're not gonna get attacked then you won't have a problem, but usually you'll need all the food you can get to boom your eco and get a defensive/offensive army. Without food you'll be a sitting duck.
