The title might sound funny (it is, indeed ) , but how are we noobs supposed to survive online games when being constantly harassed by impatient/noob-haters players? I'm a very slow learner, and it doesn't even matter if I take the care to say explicitly in my rooms' descriptions that I'm A SUPER NOOB, people often get mad at me
I like to play the old vanilla versions (AoM + Titans), so I use GameRanger a lot. Thus I dare not even think of using Vlooby, as players there are surelly less n00bish, and would be much more impatient with me, I guess.
What do you guys think? Were things always like that when you old-schoolers were learning and if so, how did you overcome it?

This answer isn't a professional answer
I can suggest you 3 ways (you can do the 3 ways ): -play against AI and imagine a strategy with one major god on one map. You try it against the AI and when it gets easy you host a room on this map and you do the strat. If you don't know how to make a strat there are no doubt some guides on this forum
-record one of your game and ask advices with the recording
-The best way is to know someone who isn't bad, and who has time to play with you. Make fast 1v1 (don't know if we can speed up the game, but if not enable cheat codes and then write "LETS GO! NOW!". After each game, your mate will give you advices, based on the stats at the end or a recording. After 10 games you will have a correct level

Play aginst the AI get get a good grasp of the basics and try on harder levels. Then join or create games that are clearly more "relaxed" and not competitive and work up from there. After many years I am still a weak player generally overall so don't worry too much about it.

I agree with what has already been said. Learn against the AI and start with just one major god. I recommend being able to consistently beat the hard AI before you play against other players. There are some maps like Food Wood Gold (FWG) that are easier to play as you have less to manage.
I found some videos by StrangeStrike helped me. He has a couple of guides. When I was learning I mostly play scenarios and left supremacy alone.

I say the first mistake is you're using gameranger. People are very immature on that. If you don't want to use Voobly, understandable. Go with the Extended Edition. Majority of players speak English, are honest and modest about what level they're at, and there's always someone willing to help you out.

Thanks, guys!
Well, every time I try using Vlooby, I get that version mismatch error! PS: I let it update my game install, but even then no success, so it seems I'm stuck at GameRanger Also, I don't like the extended edition a lot.

The extended édition doesn't make Big differences for the classic civs, you can say that chinese are cheated but you can also host "no chinese" maps (in the title) you will not be the only one
