Hey guys, whats up?

I love to play using the original (retail) game, IE: not the extended edition, so I was thinking: how many players of the vanilla AOM & TT are still alive today?

Maybe we can make this topic a place to gather everyone who still enjoys the experience of the old and good retail version, without all the hassles of the "extended revision", witch is, in my opinion, not worth, considering all the issues...

What do you guys think?

DO YOU love to play the original games? I would love to meet you guys and enjoy some online matches! Warning: I'm a moderate noob hehe

ill be honest you wont find a lot of players here that play TT at this point, at least on the forums. I personally have gotten so used to the EE, TT feels like it's lacking whenever I go back. You'll find a lot of players on GameRanger and Voobly playing TT because that's what it's for, but in my opinion the interface and convenience of the EE still tops those. It's also the place where the most people speak English and it's easy to separate the noobs from the pros.

Hold your horses!

When watching twitch streams I see the online lobbies of EE and can open Voobly and Gameranger to compare them. Gameranger alone has more players than EE, same goes for Voobly. Playercount drops hard for Voobly&Gr in the european morning hours but even then about 3 games are waiting for players, not sure how EE is doing.

I recently calculated the active players browsing using the Voobly numbers.
Voobly shows: All games waiting, all games being played and all players in lobby. 62% of the guys in lobby where playing, 38% were just lurking, chatting or afk. Voobly also links players to their running twitch accounts so you can just start watching a game which is being played and chat with people there.
Gameranger shows: All games waiting, all games being played. So I calculated from that numbers up how many where online to compare, but I forgot that.
EE shows only the games waiting. No games being played, no players afk or a chatting lobby for everyone to spamm "JOIN ROOM 36 BLOODSPORT OR ZELDA" like Voobly. So looking at 3-8 games waiting the EE lobby looks very sad. The best thing about EE is Quickmatch where you get matched to a player of similar rank to play ranked on a random map. U dont know who you are playing against or which god he picked until it starts.

Voobly also has Blindpick mode by default, where you cant see which gods are being chosen in the game. Also you can just host a room with a mod active and everyone joining autodownloads that mod and you play with it, but when joining a unmodded room it deactivates again.

Yesterday I played on Gameranger with 3-6 players scenarios for hours. The Village of Nowhere by tasterix with 3 to 6 players, the tower defense with 3 to 4 players, and my latest scen with 3 players. Not sure if you'd find players for this kind of stuff so fast on EE. I think EE but also the game in general has a much wider singleplayer base than multiplayer community. Just look at heavens downloads where you can put hundreds of mods on your game which makes it impossible to play online.

Voobly is more competitive and has its own ELO rating, so seperating noobs from pros is faster there. Also the ELO on Voobly is quite old and deflated, so Voobly Elo is worth more than EE Elo. One player said he'd be easy above 2k on EE but remains 1.7k on Voobly.

I still see a lot of valid reasons to play the vanilla AOM & TT:

1- You can use custom resolutions by changing the right settings on the right files. The UI doesn't seem to be scaled properly but that's not a big issue, at least for me.
2- ESanta UI adds up the right (missing) behavior that we all wanted on the original game. Again, this is my opinion; you guys might don't agree.
3- Nostalgia never deccepts you! Hehe.
4- Ok, I admit that the Extended Edition has some good features, but that is also true for the old version. I'm fascinated at the details the game offers (although I'm in no way a good or pro player!), and all the possibilities...
5- The old game has its issues about balancing, so does the EE, but I think that we would never come to a definitive conclusion about that, so why bother? Let's just enjoy...

Maybe I'm too attached to the old feelings, what do you guys think? :P

PS: sorry for my bad Engrish, I'm still learning...

Rated Voobly Games are played on the Mod Voobly Balance Patch 2.0. In the rts-forums changes are discussed. The best active players of the game like Magic and Mista are involved here and play the newest patch on twitch, sometimes even tournaments for money. Lately even some new maps got included in the normal Random Map game.

I'd totally back Voobly if it wasn't so insulting ugly. Though there are some skins you can exchange for. Another point against Voobly is that the online players are mostly med and pros.

Do you guys know if it is possible to:

1- Using ESanta UI with Gameranger and Vlooby with just one install
2- Using a single Age of Mythology Install for Vlooby and Gameranger without conflicting?
3- For GameRanger: I want to use the latest "official versions" of the game. IE: 1.10 for AOM and 1.03 for The Titans.

2) and 3) yes. That's how I have set it up. For this purpose Voobly uses the same nocd-.exe file as Gameranger does. Sometimes for 2Player-Scenario-Testing I open a room in Voobly and Gameranger to see which one fills faster and close the other one.

I only play TT. Keep looking at buying EE from Steam. Never seem to get around to it. I'd like to have a digital version in case my hard copy suddenly becomes incompatible with current computers, but I don't like a lot of what I hear about the new version.

But then people were like that about TT as well.

A few were, anyway.

Any idea how large the file size is for EE? And is it worth it to buy the new expansion too? How large is that?
The thing is, I have wifi through my phone with only two bars of signal at best. Downloading games is a hassle. I have almost a dozen waiting for a good opportunity.

2668 MB without Chinese, though I have the files too because I can play against them. But dont buy chinese, they look ugly and are horrible.

So Game Ranger won Voobly by a low margin. But Steam owned them.
I wonder why they dont sell it all time.

2668 meg? Jeez. How did they ever fit games onto CD's back in the day when an expansion would fill some five of them?

+1 Don't bother buying the Chinese DLC, it's very buggy.

I just witnessed some chinese gameplay on twitch, so if you're interested in what EE looks like, there it is: https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Age of Mythology

I'm still confused by the light settings. When I started a scenario I worked on for months for the first time in EE I didn't recognize it.

What guys? This is the link to online Age of Mythology Twitch Channels, there are all kinds of guys depending on what time you click in there. Often also Voobly streamers, running tournaments and expert matches. :P
