I was totally sold for AOK since the day it came out, because I loved AOE so much. For three years, I was an avid Zone AOK player... But when you play alot, your focus in the game changes...
At first, when you play the game for the first time, for instance the learning campaign, you look for strategies. you change your tactics from game to game, experimenting with each unit, each tactic, etc. You think, hmmm, a paladin, maybe I could make 20 of those, and attack his outpost... Hmm, I saw he has horse archers... Are archers good against that? I will try arbalests... You look for weaknesses in the enemy, you try something different each game...
Every game IS different... Thats what made me so hooked on AOE...
But things start to change once you get mroe experienced... That experimenting with new strategies is gone I have found... PLayers dont try some new innovative approach to ush the enemy. Players dont look for a weak spot in the enemy defenses. Take the dm... Its just click paladin a million times and attack... So maybe its a little more unpredictable then that, but its true... Always the same thing... Click faster. Click faster... Rank gets higher and higher by playing those who dare to try something different...
In the rm too... It had become "watch recorded game of AOk champion. Copy him down to the second. Kill people who havent watched it..."
Theres no innovation in AOK games anymore... Theres no new strategies... Theres no one daring to try something new, using ones strategic brilliance to counter an army, or surprise the enemy... I played AOK a long time, and the game became, feudal time at 9:00. Click, "h", "c "c" "c" "c", shift click vill, "b" "e". 1-5 go to sheep... 6-10 go to wood. And so on... You should be at enemy base at 11 minutes... you should have 20 villagers by 13 minutes... It goes on and on... They call it a strategy, but, is it anything more then just point and click...
Well, Im sure most of you knew this, but the reason I am writing this is so that ES makes a game that can be played infinite times, even more so then AOK... Let me tell you, AOK is surprisingly unpredictable compared to other games... Thats why we all have played it so long... Thats how it has sold so many copies, for several years! But it falls short... In the rm, there are always x sheep, x boars, and so on near your base... A patch of gold here. A clump of trees here. Its completely equal for both sides... Now Im not saying this shouldn’t be.. It would be unfair for one person to have more food then another person... but the SAME thing every im is boud to get redundant... - Basically I want to be able to keep having fun with this game until the expansion pack… -Vladimir87 -On a side note, there is something that is making me very angry… I just saw the previews for this games called C&C Generals. It is a new westwood game. Now I like westwood, but we all know ES is a whole ton better then they are J. Anyways, this new game Generals though, I must admit looks pretty cool. The graphics are not quite as good as aom IMO, but they are the closest rival I have seen. It makes me SO angry… Westwood in short has more resources and manpower! Since conquerors, thyey have released of planned to release the following games: RA2 All ES has planned is AOM. Im ok with this, as they are trying their hardest on one game, but it seems like a losing battle. AOM may sell three times as many copies as RA2, but can it outsell all of these games? It just doesn’t seem fair… Im satisfied that ES is doing thei best to make AOM surpass all of westwoods attempts to beat them. Keep it up! The link to the Generals preview is here… [This message has been edited by vladimir87 (edited 03-19-2002 @ 09:51 AM).]
