A long time ago, they said that when you upgraded from armor and such, that the units visual appearance would change, but i havent heard anything about it recently i wonder if it is still in?

It's been in all along, to the best of my knowledge...
Not all upgrades change a unit's appearance. Many do. Mithril breastplate does not...whereas medium infantry gives your ulfsark a silver coloured cloak, and copper armor gives him a reddish torso. Something like that anyway. The differences may seem subtle at first, but you learn to recognise them fairly easily.
Things like thundering hooves or spears on the horizon though, no...they don't.

Most of the normal improvements change a unit's appearance, as do the wall and tower upgrades and a few others. The economic upgrades even change the tool the Villagers hold, though it is not always easy to noice. Most of the myth improvements that affect normal units do not have a visual upgrade, but those that affect most MUs do change the unit art.
The reason it isn't consistent is because you don't know what order the upgrades are applied. For example, Mithril Breastplate does not have Iron Mail as a prereq or anything, so sometimes your unit would have the Iron Mail art and sometimes they would have the Mithril Breastplate art. Improvements that affect speed and range are also hard to show.
