So I spent about 4 hours playing the demo last night and with the exception of the heroes and gods, it felt (and played) almost exactly like AoEII. Is this the case?
If someone (me) was only lukewarm towards AoEII (I haven't even bothered beating it, though I do play it every now and again when I'm bored), would you guys still recommend picking it up? I will grant you that the graphics are extraordinary when compared to AoEII but please don't cite that as the only reason why someone should pick it up.
Thanks for any opinions you guys would like to share.

Yes with the exception of Heroes, Gods, God Powers, 3d, more diverse cultures, and unique gameplay for each culture it is exactly the same. I mean you use a keyboard and a mouse.
What did you expect? It should have the same feel. It should basically run the same. AOK was great and they took what worked and tried to improve what didn't.

the greeks, and in this case Zeus, has most in common with AoE and AoK. Norse and Eggy are extremely different, so unless you really didn't like the demo (that is, you don't like the style of play, or perhaps rts games in general) then get the game

Yeah, I really felt the AoE vibe when I was playing the Greeks. It is just like playing AoE with awesome graphics and better gameplay. However, like Toastabal said, the other two civs are way different.
The demo only shows a tiny bit about the game. It isn't really enough to get a good feel for the game, but it does show off the awesome graphics and gameplay.
I just bought the retail, and it is awesome. The only reason I'm not playing it right now is cuz I am at work and my work comp doesn't have it installed

> Yes with the exception of Heroes, Gods, God Powers,
WC3 had things like this and it still played exactly like the other WCs. Big woop.
> 3d,
Nice, but alone not worth $50
> more diverse cultures,
This is one of the things that intrigues me about AoM.
> and unique gameplay for each culture
See, this is what I wasn't (and still am not) sure about. Take the city building series. You had Egyptians in "Pharoah" and "Cleopatra", Greek in "Zeus" and "Poseidon", Rome in the "Caesar" trilogy yet with very few exceptions, though they were different cultures, they were all more or less the same game and if you played one you pretty much played them all. And that is what I'm afraid of in AoM.

Kind of a simplistic view. With that in mind, all games are the exact same: Quake, The Sims, Baldur's Gate... Lego Island.
> What did you expect? It should have the same feel.
Something as revolutionary as was touted in the P/reviews.
> It should basically run the same.
Except that they consistently say it's not a sequal. So why should it run the same?

Ok.

This is good to know!

While I'm not overly keen on RTS (I prefer turn based; I don't mind RTS overly much, though definitely not multi-player), the only thing that really turned me off on the demo was the fact that it played *so much* like AoEII. If the other cultures play completely different than the Greeks, it may just be worth me picking up.

I have played some of those, and yes they seem similar, but that's not the case in AOM, i can tell you that.

If you're looking for something new try a new game genre or just a new game in general. AoM wasn't meant to be a totally new game where it was a shock to everyone. They took a lot of new features and game play and added to what worked in their prievious RTS experience. Yes, it is an RTS game and ALL RTS share a lot in common. AoM was built for RTS fans that wanted a faster and more competitive game. If ES had made the game "too" different all the oldbies like me would complain. I had the alpha and the game was a lot of fun to me. I would rather improve on something that works rather then scrap the whole concept and have somethign completely new.
My hobby is playing video games, and my dream is to someday get paid to do it.
