Hello,

I've played the original AoE quite a bit and like it a lot. I've been playing Warcraft 3 for awhile now and I liked it too.

I've never played AoK though. So I'm wondering which will be more worth it: getting AoM or trying AoK + expansion?

Obviously AoM is fresh out, but AoM was a great game and is on value pricing now...

So what do you guys think?

Thanks.

There are more similarities between WC3 and AoM than AoK. However, there are more similarities between AoE and AoK.

The choice is totally up to you. Your financial situation is probably the biggest deciding factor. AoK is a great game that had my attention for more than 2 years. What I've played of AoM I've liked (and I have the excitement of learning new techniques, etc again!)

AoK + Expansion is available for about the same price as AoM just by itself.

You can get AoM at Curcuit City for $35

If your computer is up to specs (you play WC3 so it must be), I would say go with AoM. It will be worth more in the long run since AoM kills the AoK online player base.

Both are good games and great values. I just think that AoK gaming community will be smaller so harder to find games etc.

yeah.... AoM is going for $35 while AoE2 Gold (AoK + expansion) is going for $30... so I can't make up my mind.

Although I must say that I don't really play online that much if at all. Using a dial-up connection really doesn't work well in the multiplayer realm.

dial-up works fine as long as you don't play games with more than 3 other people...
As far as single player goes, i would think Aom is more worth your money. The Campaign is a lot more fun, and the single player ai is better. (still not great, but better than Aok)

I'd pick Age of Mythology these days.
I'm on a dial-up as well (56.6k) and AoK is smoother for multiplayer (I also find MSZone better for dialups over the new ESO but that might change when they optimise ESO a bit). But AoM is better for replayability if you want to play against AI more then Multiplay. AoM is about par with me playing on Europe's Servers in WarCraft 3. Little Lag, sometimes annoying with more then 4 people (including you) but playable.
The Campaign in AoM is much better, more fluid, and more fun then the AoK ones which are divided into 8 or so Campaigns as opposed to AoM's which is all connected (think of WarCraft 3's story) and also more engrossing. I was playing last night and looked at the clock and it said 3:30am, I played 3 more missions (Egypt Campaign.. very long.. heh) and looked at the clock and it read 6:40am.... I wondered where my 3 hours of life went
Never did that with AoK.
AoK's Random Maps are about the same as AoM's but I've found AoM's oceans and mountains are more varied then AoK's.
Finally, Age of Empires 2 (AoK and AoC) are alot like Age of Empires 1, the only major differences are Pop Limits and Unit Variations in Armies (need Combined Forces moreso in AoK then in the original). AoM is drawn a bit from AoK, major differences include the Pop Limit (around 220, but units are just like WarCraft 3 they can take between 2-5 from that pop count). 3D Terrain, Heroes, Myth Units, Air Units, Relics actually have a purpose (give bonuses rather then just giving gold - most don't even give gold anymore).
The 3 Major Civs in AoM are all varied compared to one another, and since you choose another Minor-God each time you advance in Ages you can really have a Unique Civilization.

So yeah, I'd pick AoM over AoK anyday.

I hate to do this but I'd say AOE to AOK is a night and day difference. They are basically completely different games.

I'm playing AOM exclusively now but AOKtC is one hell of a game and worth every penny, as is AOM.

One thing to realize is that as we speak there are still way more people playing AOK then AOM. (online new to the Age series should definately pick up AOKtC and play on the zone for a while....great boot camp for AOM.
