Advancing faster than 5:15 is usually really bad for your econ, but then again most of the time i play eggy so i usually classic around 5:45- 6:00 minutes.....

Its important that your TC is working during the entire time in archaic. You should constantly be making villagers until your advance, the least you should have is probably 16 or 17, any less and its not good for your econ. Of course Ideally you would want to have 21 but thats is normally not a good thing to try.

First of all I think when a lot of people say advance with 20-22 villagers they actually mean 20-22 population total which = 18 villagers or so. Secondly play with the score of all players showing and you can kinda see what you should do and if you can hold off going to classical for that extra 1 or two villagers. Also depending on which civ you play. When I play norse I of course try for a 5.5 classical. With greek and eggy I tend to go 6-6.5 and have towers/heros/sentinals hold off a rush if it comes.
