many of the greatest armies of all time (alexander the great, shaka of the zulu,) used battle formations that became infamous. can aom help relive the glory days of organized fighting? Ive tried many formations but it seems people are too stupid sometimes to respond. If you know any formations (real or of your own design) please post them here.

Well, I'm not sure if you can use this, but: I once played a game as Poseidon 2v2. I scouted the FB of my nearest enemy and I saw he was making katapeltes + turma vs. my toxies and hippikons. What I did then, was pretty annoying for him when he attacked: His army attacked my toxies, and I moved my hippikons out of his LOS, so when he was busy killing my toxies, my hippikons charged vs. his turmas and I defeated his army twice like that (his katapeltes died horribly vs. toxies and building fire). But I'm not sure if this has anything to do with battle formations...

it's so infortunate that no one's made a mod where there are more interesting formations. mind you, it would still be alot of micro, but it would be fun for veterans.

The Zulu formations, involving thousands of spear carrying combatants, was often successfully countered by the British formation of "several men manning a belt-fed machine-gun".

that's one reason why Oranos is so very powerful. his Sky Passages allows him to flank other armies more easily. It also allows him to move his armies around without the loss of time, and he has a small element of surprise, so long as the Passage was built quickly.

Battle formataions are somewhat usless in Age Of Mythology. Im not sure if spread formation works when under archer fire but it should. I never use formataions. I just keep my armies in agrressive stance.

im sure people would use them more often if you didnt have to clik that annoying advanced tactics button to get to the formation choices...
