take the ra fast heroic for example. use it to your advantage and rush in classical and totally suprise your enemy. most likely the enemy will have been building up to counter your fast heroic but is suprised when you come marching in with 30+ cheap effectice egyptian units in classical and rape is economy.
also, do strategies that would make someone think "why the hell did he go fast heroic with poseidon???" and catch them TOTALLY off suprise. he would have been making anti-cavalry units the whole time and you would be in heroic.
use all the less often used major gods because then the opponent will not know how to react to counter and will probably go with the usual strat for that civilization which you will know and counter.
comments on my ideas would be helpful.

Being a Ra player (no, I don't try for fast heroic every time ), I can tell you that an enemy that goes fast heroic along with me is a much more difficult opponent than one that tries to attack me early. I haven't really had a sucessful early attack on me yet. Towers and walls prevent that.

Yes, the surprise element is key in many games, catching them off guard may ultimately win you the game. However it is also important to use the advantages of your civilisation.
eg. Whats the point of picking poseidon if ur not going heavy fishing or cavalry
The whole point of having multiple civilisations is to give you advantages in certain areas over your opponent, why would you waste that and give your opponent a level playing field? Sure a tactic here or there, like a quick prepared switch to other units to catch him and his army off guard.

I always play with the element of surprise. I never conform to any build orders or defenite strategies like rushes or turtles. I usually go somewhere in between all of these and just play my style, I win enough games this way to be happy with my score.

I agree I have been playing a fast Heroic Ra to get siege equipment to go along with my basic Barracks army. It does tend to throw some people off balance.

bigboss, i did not mean a rush to counter a fh, i meant if playing someone else who is expecting fh like norse for example.
also, going a lot against what the civ specializes in is not always bad. how many civs get cost reductions for their units??? 1 and that is poseidon who you used your example with. do you remember Mozart in AOC and him drushing with mayans even though most everyone knew that aztecs were the best, then mongols??? he was a great player, maybe not the best (the best were people who used SAME strat over and over). now, what would you have more fun with, using same strat OVER and OVER and maybe having an average of 50 more points or using a strat for a week or so then switching to another cool strat which makes people wander what you were thinking???
