Shakespere always had good storylines. Akira Kurosawa based a bunch of his films on Shakespere.
Also try using real-life mythology. Lloyd Alexander, an author, did this in The Arkadians. So instead of Greek mythology, you could use Egyptian mythology. A preist is walking around and is accused of heresy, or something. So he is exiled and on his travels he collects a host of strange weirdos whose pasts, which are told along the way, reflect ancient Egyptian mythology.
For example, the priest is walking in the desert, when he finds a terribly wounded warrior. He immediately heals him, and the warrior tells of how a rival of his father had defeated him, and seperated his mutilated body across the desert. Then, for vengeance, the son trained as a warrior with the guidance of his mother, and fought the rival. The battle lasted so long, it was called a draw, and they left.
Sp you have to help the warrior find and kill the rival.
That mini-plot is vaguely hinged on the myth of Horus, Osiris, and Set.
Just a random thought...
