I did not know about this till recently which I found out by accident. A good way to keep a player alive is to place a victory marker for that player. Then you can just delete it with triggers when you want normal victory conditions to apply.
This should people having to take up room on the map placing arkantoses or something on the map to keep that player alive. Victory markers can be placed anywhere and act just like cinematic blocks except that they keep that player alive.
I though I would post this little but useful trick.
EDIT: A little extra for you - it also makes a brillient invisible unit that can be picked up by the change in area trigger. I thought only invisible targets could do that.
