You should probably try to figure out why it's taking so long. I never attempted any scenarios for a while because it took so long to save, but now for soem reason they all take a few seconds.

Seven to eight minutes?! I've never really needed to change this but if all else fails, try deleting ~testing and ~last.

3 big effecters in auto save time:
amount of unnececary triggers map size eye candy (SADLY!)
The controls for autosaving and such mainly come from the interface stuff. The autosave when you leave the menu is a new addition that was added to the main menu. You would have to editor the editor file.
Open uieditormenu.xml in your data file and edit the line: saveScenario("~last") leaveGame
Change it to: leaveGame
The save when testing a a game cannot be changed though. The long save time is msot likely to be caused b having a lot of units rather than the map size itself. The size of the map would generate the same size no matter what terrain and such you do as yuour jsut changing the information for terrain on that spot. I don;t remmeber big maps taking long to save. However saving utnsi take sa lot of room as it has to record all the properties the untis have like its position, size, state and a load of other stuff. There quite a lot of liens of code saved for each unit from what I remember. Appart form deleting units I don't think there is much you can do.
