I think this topic constitutes a new thread, so here we go. I need a good way to create the illusion of being very high off of the ground, I.E.
and
Some conditions, it has to be navigable by units, and it has to be able to fit into a specific part of the map without lighting effects and what not altering the rest of the map, its for an rpg i have been working on and it needs to have a silver-spire diablo dungeon feel.

how about you put a whole crapton of mist down on the ground so it seems as if the bottom is obscured by clouds? You can use custom lightings to change the color of the mist.

What Zeno said + use black terrain on the lower part of the slopes (so it looks like the terrain fades into the mist).
Another alternative would be to use the trick with tremor to create extreme elevation (--> cast 100 tremors on 1 location to create a downwards spike and use the paint tool to paint some water on the "top" of this spike. You can smooth the terrain by painting a larger area of water around this spike. This is very difficult to get right.).

the 'Sun Color' field in Vachu's Lighting editor will change the color of mist.

Another question, as you can see by the D3 screenies, the player walks across a platform that appears for all intents and purposes to be "floating". Any suggestions on how to make something look like that?

Sorry for being late on this one. One thing to keep in mind with depth illusions in AOM is that there is no difference between a normal size object far away and a shrunken object up close. In the CSC I played with perspective quite often:
Jack and the beanstalk: everything is pretty much at the same height, but sizes and layers give the illusion of depth
under da sea: again, the turtles are all the same distance, but size gives the illusion that the smaller-looking ones are further away
also, it's been a little while since I've made a screenshot, but one of the colors in nottud's color control controls exactly the color of the fog. (You have nottud's super editor right?)

Diablo 2 is still the best in the series. Off topic, I know, but Diablo 3 can't even compare, at least in my opinion, anyway.

The turtle is so very cute but competition was still tough in that round [good old times rant]. The beanstraw one illustrates how dfficult it is to create an illusion of depth from that angle, it is magnificently done. I remember that the pit of corpses shot in one of the SSTs nearly drove me insane when I was trying something similar.
