I'm not sure why it has taken me this long to make this thread. On May 20, 2017, Venlesh sent me this picture of Pepe the frog drawn in elevation in the editor. He had discovered that terrain1.tga (data folder) is a heightmap for the default editor scenario (the grass A covered thing that loads when you first open the editor).
My first thought was to do this:

I don't think terrain1.tga was a novel discovery. At least a few modders (Warrior Mario, Mr. Emjer) knew about it. But, as far as I know, nobody has used it to make hyper-geographically accurate scenarios. Which leads me to my question for you fine people.
Is there a less stupid way to paint water? I can get to-the-tile geographical accuracy using terrain1.tga, showing islands like Crete or Hawaii in great detail, but as soon as I place water on the map, the elevation is obliterated and the detail of the coast lines is lost. I tried changing the water brush settings but they appear to be hard coded to be circular (even though water is actually applied tile-by-tile) and with a minimum radius for all three water types (ocean, lake, and river iirc). I tried using triggers to raise the water level but these affected the elevation of the entire map.
So, I have pretty much given up on using terrain1.tga to make a world map, Europe map, etc. because I couldn't solve this problem with the water. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas to share?
