I've been working with creating some new terrains lately and they work but they I have to scale them down to 256x256. Is it possible to put them in at 512x512 w/o the free paint or paint land crashing aom?

i have which is how i know it crashes. i think this is because when aom scales down the texture for the icon it is the wrong size icon. i need a way around this.

Unfortunately, the terrain textures seem to get placed over the terrain .bti frames bit for bit and in AoM/TT this is a 256x256 frame. Bigger frames would obviously be cool, but given the machines they were working with at the time it would be like a 4x increase in workload for the graphics card, and lag-city.
I'm not sure what you are using for painting, but Gimp seems to have a better palette and is therefore kinder to 50% size reductions.
