What civilization has always been missing from Aom? A civilization that has been modded several times but never really finished. This civilization is Rome. From a glance the story of ome appears to be a legend, how a humble village became supreme ruler of the entire Mediterranean Basin, incuding Greece, Italy, Judea and North Africa among many Roman provinces. When we set out to encaptulate Rome, we didn't stop at a few Roman units, we included all we could, and it still isn't finished!
One gaping hole in any Roman mod has always been a lack of the peoples who fought the Romans, namely Barbarians, Parthians and Etruscans to name a few. Though Rome's greatest enemy was an Imperial nation which had trading relations almost wherever they could sail. This nation was Carthage. Carthage will also be included in this mod, featuring a full complement of Gods, myth units, and godpowers the Carthiginans are not to be missed!
However, two civs is a huge job for any modder, and many hands make light work! if you want to help make Roman units, buildings or scenarios (possibly even Barbarians) simply ask for a job and you are likely to get something to do! All you need to do is show your ability (experienced modders are preferred) and you can help. You will not need to join Epic Studios if you want to help.
The Romans feature these units (current pics don't display all units, merely the trainable ones)
:
From top left' Primus Pilus (not trainable), Legionnaire,
Triarii, Priceps, Centurion(not trainable), Hastati, Velite, Archer Auxilia, and Signifer(not trainable).
Though Roman origin is unknown, their Imperial dominance was unquestionable. Dominating the Mediterannean for thousands of years, building awesome feats of engineering, liike the Colosseum, aqueducts and excellent roads. The Emperor Marcus Aurelius summed up what being Roman meant, "as an Emperor Rome is my homeland, but as a man, I am a citizen of the world."
The Carthginian military units:
From top left: Sacred Band, Citizen levy, Celt-Iberian Warband, Libyan Spearman, Iberian Caetrati and Scutarii.
From top left: Sacred Band Cavalry, Shield Cavalry, Lancearii and Poeni Cavalry.
The Carthiginians have their roots in the people of ancient Canaan. From the Canaanites came the Phoencians and from them came a colony centralized in Carthage, in Northern Africa. The Carthiginians enventually built an Empire that included North Africa, The Iberian penninsula and parths of Western Europe. The end of Carthage came in 146 BCE, where the people of Rome destroyed Carthage to avenge their losses int Second Punic war.
The Barbarian tribes currently feature these units:
From the top left: Gallic Cavalry, Briton Noble Cavalry, Franciscan, Gallic Skirmisher, Germanic Archer, Germanic Swordsman and Warband Spearmen.
The people who were named the "Barbarians" by Rome were really a people who could be grouped into three different groups. The inhabitants of Gaul, Germany, and Scandanavia. The people of Gaul were typically the ones who did the most fighting with Rome as an Imperial power, that being because they were closest to Italy. They were often notable shipbuilders and fought fiercely using swords, spears and bows. The people of Germany were more violent, probably taking after their home-country of wild animals and forests. On the grassland of their country they were avid riders and were made into Roman auxiliary cavalry upon
the introduction of much of their homeland into Rome. The people of Scandanavia are the now-famous "Vikings", infamous shipbuilders and raiders, they raided Roman coast fo hundreds of years.
Greeks:
From top left: Hoplite, Spartan Hoplite Officer, Spartan Hoplite, Spartan Phalangite, Theban Sacred Band and Armored Hoplite.
The Nation of Greece was never a unified country, Plato called the Greeks "
Parthians:
From top left: Persian native cavalry, Camel Cataphract, Cataphract, Parthian horse archer, Persian Light Cavalry, Persian Mercenary, Immortal, Mede Conscript, Mede composite bowman.
The Parthians were a people who fought the Romans for control of their Easter provinces, mainly Turkey, Judea ans Syria. They were effectively the last people of the mighty Persian Empire, which is why we see Persian units like the Immortal.
Macedonians/Seleucids:
From top left: Prodromos, Hetairoi, Macedonian Phalangite, Hypaspist, Peltast
Aside from the Roman army the Macedonian army was the greatest in the ancient world. This was largely due to their massive 15-20' long sarissas. Fighitng in phalanx formation they conquered Greece and then went on to defeat the aging Persian Empire at such memorable battles as Gaugamela. Here, they fight as Ptolemys, Selucids and native Macedons to resist their Roman opressors.
Heroes, Scipio, Hannibal and Caesar:
The Roman civilization uses heroes much like the Greeks, one for each age, Scipio Age 1, Pompey the Great Age 2, Caesar Age 3 and Emperor Trajan Age 4. The Carthiginian Hero Hannibal Barca will fight alone, though get stronger in each age.
The Roman Cataphract:
This super-heavy cavalry is available to those who have the Titans Expansion, Due to it's Contarius animations it would be illegal to feature it to those who have the Vanilla AOM. Though For you Titans users, keep your eyes open for his interesting unit!
