When you merge two models, they both need to point to the same .ddt. The easiest way to do this is to merge the two existing .ddts into one, however when you do the original uvw will stretch across both images (e.g. it will have streched 200% in the x-axis). What you need to do is:
1. Create the dual texture and stretch it 200% in the vertical for gmax input.
2. Open the first model, and reduce the uvw in the x-axis by 50% - just select equal horizontal verts and scale them down - until unit 1 is aligned with the texture again.
3. Repeat for Unit 2 (in a separate file).
4. Once you are happy with both, merge the two together. If you are prompted for material, select use scene material. To make sure check the "entire" textures and make sure the same texture (and only one texture) is applied to both elements. If not drag the one you want onto both until (4) is achieved.
5. Align the two elements as required and attach them and name this element Animated.
6. Apply the underlying model texture, ready for export.
7. Export the model.
Note sometimes you can get by just defining the second model in the _anim and using connect attachpoint to add them together. Examples of this approach are the LoME dwarven Citadel, Warg Riders and Warg Axeriders.

As long as you have faith in what you have not tried, and not what was tried and failed before you, all else will be a cake walk!!
For Modding, for Life.
