I played against a Thor player recently as Zeus who really shut me down, and shut me down good. I know that Thor is the best at rushing, and that the Greeks, especially Zeus, are vulnerable in Classical (he doesn't get double-hitpoint-buildings/sentinels or militia).
He'd advance to Classical between 4:30 and 4:45 with Freya, making a little group of RCs, and then proceed to make my life hell. I always thought that advancing to Classical with a strong economy at 5:30 or so was ideal for a Greek who wanted to get to Heroic in one piece to pump counters. But I'm constantly finding myself hard-pressed to beat Norse players like the aforementioned who strangle me to death, every game. I've tried hippikons/toxotes, hippikons/hoplites, and hoplites/toxotes. I tried walling myself in to slow him down. I know I'm not PG_Fire or anything like that, but I don't suck THAT much either. I've also played as Norse and Egyptian, and I have to say that Greeks right now have the short end of the stick when it comes to surviving Classical. Yes, Greeks CAN win in Classical. They can win if you outclass your opponent by a lot. They can win if they got lucky in the placement of nearby goldmines and deer-herds. They can win if your opponent is also Greek. But that's not nearly reliable enough compared to a Thor opponent who can rush the same way on every map because of his gold-dependant economy. I've posted here and there asking how to stop the rush with Zeus, but it seems ATM the only way to survive as Greek versus the Thor rush is to play Poseidon or Hades. I have a soft spot for the ole lightnin' slinger -- hell, even my dog's name is "Zeus."
"And through the tossing, monstrous trees
there sang a dim refrain
Fraught deep with twice a million years
of evil, hate and pain:
'We were lords ere man had come,
and shall be lords again.' "
