My view :
"Ao" is there just to identify it as an Age game, one of the Age series. The subsequent letter is just a convenient way to identify which one of them it is. E --> Empires, K --> Kings, C --> Conquerors, M --> Mythology, T --> Titans.
RoR is an exception for two reasons : It's probably easier and basically the same thing, with a bit more accuracy saying RoR instead of AoR. Also, at that time, people possibly didn't know about AoE II, and therefore didn't realise that a second one was coming, so there was no need to identify it as a part of the Age series. When AoK came out, the trend followed, and stays there with any of the Age series.

Intrepid, sure you could do that, but most people don't seem to want to take that extra time (including me) of almost one second. Hence you shorten it down to AoT or TT. Have you ever (as in, ever) seen someone use AoEII:AoK for aok? Same principle really, it's just not gonna happen, even though it's the most correct way to do it.
