RTS- its a name we hear over and over, game after game... and unlike RPG's or FPS's its hard to make an RTS original.
AOM obviously is one of the best, but even AOM is pretty much the same as AOE2. They keep trying to make them original, like Armies of Exigo is trying to make the underground part of their game. But they all turn out being the same in the end.
I'd say the most overused RTS style is fantasy. Games like WarCraft (I hate WarCraft, but ill give them credit) are just being plain ripped off. And the Age games are also ripped off by stuff like Empire Earth.
So are we ever going to see anything new? Well, fortunately, the answer is: Yes. Battle for Middle Earth is pretty much guarranteed to add some life to RTS. But how about after that? I havent really heard any news of RTS games after BFME. Is it possible that it could be the last truly original RTS? Of course we see the possibilty of AOE3, even AOM2, and as much as i like ES, I highly doubt, unless the pull off some kind of miracle, that its really going to "re-define" the genre. God only knows if Blizzard is going to make a StarCraft 2. On one hand, they make a StarCraft FPS instead of SC2, but on the other hand maybe theyre making it to keep fans excited while they make a sequel for the RTS.
Maybe you have a different opinion, maybe you feel as if RTS is still emerging as a great genre, but if you ask me, its reaching the end of its time.
I told you I'd be back.
