Scorpion men are annihilation machines, so cheap yet such rape .
Haven't you ever seen an anc/ecl with 4 scorpion men and a sphinx at 9 minutes?
Beating other MU 1v1 isn't particularly important. If you went by that then the cyclops is the 'best' classical MU simply because it has the strongest attack. Realistically, the difficulty you have actually getting these guys out, with their enormous cost and huge pop, offsets any benefit from having them.
Nemean Lions are underused, but are both affordable and amazing fighters with Aphrodite's upgrades. They are proficient at killing human units, have a very high resistance to pierce-damage dealing heroes (eggy, greek, atl), demolish buildings in no time AND have myth-busting capabilities. They are very easy to spam aswell, with the increased favour rate from Aphrodite, and a few extra on gold, you can have 5-6 out by 12 mins.
Battle boars are probably #3, they are like Nemean Lions, but not as good, IMHO
Petsuchos, best heroic ranged MU, really cheap cost. Combined with Roc they make great raiders too. However, whilst owning norse and to some extent atl, pets aren't so hot against Nepthys Priests and tough Greek heroes. They also dont have much realistic building-kill potential, despite their crush attack.
Frost Giants are certainly also bs units, and rank highly in the heroic MU scale. Personally I find them too easily killed to be top MU.
Hydras? Let down by their food cost, which is the worst res for MU to cost. They are spammable as Zeus on maps like midgard, and can become really powerful, but cost and durability let them down.
Stymphs, high favour cost but fairly easy to kill with ranged heroes if you aren't careful. Can make mincemeat out of Norse but other cultures can deal with them.
Behemoths/Mountain Giant, very similar MUs, very high food cost is nasty, nice building killer potential but good against little else.
Manticores are better than the lowly satyr, and can be used I left out Roc because it has no attack, and is more of an auxilliary unit than a 'true' MU.
Sometimes you need to scare the lambs,
tell tales of evil bad wolves.
Because if there is nothing to fear,
they might think for themselves.
