By the time I played it online, you had to use a program called "the zone", something that I THINK came with the game, or at least auto-launched when you tried to play online.

However, I never got the concept of people asking for stuff that a 2 minute survey on google can reply. A lot faster, and a lot more reliable. Anywho, it seems like as of 2006 microsoft widrew the msn gaming matching it had through the zone, so now you have to go to gamespy, which you can find right about...here

It's aparently free and works right about the same way the old zone did. Can't be sure if there will be a big enough player base for you to play against, but it never hurts to try.

the old zone doesnt support aoe2 anymore, but gamespy does, u have to play on that.

acuallty, there are often alot of people (200+) playing aoe2.

go to gamepark.com and download gamepark. i would play via gamepark becuz there is like 1000 ppl playing for the xpack. gamespy only has about 200.

That's where I originally made this account! I deicded to move on to 3D graphics though! hah

Yea Gamespy has a lot of people online. I don't play online, but back when I was actually trying to, there would be many people online (basically I'm not prepared to piss around with my router in command line and such)
