Well, you are a newb (no offense).
I suggest to read the manual, it covers extremly basic topics which i don't think you know how to do.
After that, play online and learn strategies for your god.

Econ upgrades: At the drop site. Click on the econ building, and there you will see icons in the interface. Husbandry and Hunting Dogs make your villagers more 'efficient'* collecting food. Pick-Axe and Hand-Axe improve gold and wood gathering rates respectively. 90% of the time I get Hunting dogs as soon as the granary is up, then Pick/Hand-Axe during the first age-up, depending on the map/civ.
Military upgrades: Playing as Greek, at the stable, military academy and archery range. Here you can improve your units from medium to heavy to champion. Note: there's no point researching these until you have a decent size army, or it's wasted. You can also find upgrades at the temple, depending which god you worship.
The armoury is another place where you can research stuff to make your army stronger. Different upgrades are there to improve attack, hack armour and pierce armour.
The fortress is another place where you can upgrade your soldiers, in particular, your seige units.
Basically, almost any building can research technologies.
* I know, I know. Just simplifying, is all
