I think it's very stupid how Mercenaries die after a short period of time!

Like why do they die? are they diseased or something?

And what is a useful purpose for them?

Or you just hired them for a short period of time if you are going to look at it that way.
And what is a useful purpose for them?
Mercenaries are considered OP by many. They can be used to defend town centers or other hunting areas, etc near town centers and if you have a town center close enough they can be used as raiding parties.

Certain advancements can make them a legitimate threat on the battlefield and the strategy of just running from them (as most do) until they die is not good anymore.

Good point about them being hired, but still they could have made the were they disappear instead of dying.

And thanks, thats a good strategy.

Mercenaries require no population room. So late mythic, when a good Egyptian player has plenty of trade, thus plenty of gold, they start to spam out mercenaries because they have so much excess gold, they don't know what else to do with it. Since these Mercenaries are free of pop, they give the Egyptian player extra edge because his army is now larger.

I think there should be a mercenary archer (available in mythic age). Costs 120 gold, range of 18, 12 pierce damage, 30% hack armor, 40% peirce armor.

What do u guys think? Is it too OP? I made it becuz think its weird because there isnt a proper mercenary counter to infantry.

Mercenaries are not supposed to be a race of their own, with counters to everything. There are no mercenary heroes either (thx god). Mercenaries are support for Eggy whenever they need them. This means that on top of supporting an attack with mercs from a nearby TC, Eggies are near impossible to surprise. No matter what great surprise tactics you work out to catch the Eggy at an undefended place, he will simply spam mercs there and immediately have a powerful army to defend himself. IMHO this defeats the purpose of a strategy game, because when you outsmart an Eggy, he just needs to press a button to negate your deserved advantage by producing units that train in near-zero time, cost no pop and are extremely strong, well compensating their high price. Eggy is good enough without mercs. I believe they should be removed from the game.

Leprechauns would work well for mercenary myth, but I am afraid they are not African. Merc heroes could be witch doctors.

I want to play the Merc race in AoM2. (but no, do not let this thread deteriorate into yet another AoM2 discussion)

I'm of the opposite oppinion for many reasons.

But then again, I play Isis, so I'm sort of biased.

Yes, if I played Odin and got a free titan upon hitting mythic age, I would also think that it is necessary...

Well, historically, no mercenary would ever be payed X amount of gold and then stay in army for the rest of his life, rather, he would be payed gold and then serve in the army for X months/years.

And their villagers labeled: "Runaway slaves"

Eggies really should have access to mercenary gods from which they can buy extra god powers for gold. They are such a weak race otherwise, they really need those GPs. Just like they need mercs to defend their bases because they are so weak.

Oh, lol yeah I have really never used mercenaries before.
I just diden't want to waste my gold on something that would die.

I sorta wish that the undead soldiers(Damnit forgot what they were called!) dident die within a time limit though, they look so cool.

By the way, speaking of weird units whats with the Cataphract? I know that there really high ranked calvary but why are they only avaible in editor?
Also I wish Achillies was part of the AoM campaign levels based on the war of troy.

I think they were supposed to be the original unique unit for Poseidon, a cavarly unit that counters infantry.
I read somewhere they didn't make it because the Poseidon player could then train units that counter all other units from a single building (Hippikon > archers, Prodromos > cavarly, Cataphract > infantry).

Mandible's programmer thought it would be interesting to have his creation contemplate the meaning of life. Three days and 76 bodies later the automaton still lacked an answer, but had gained extensive knowledge of human physiology.

Which cannot be true, because in the original game, Greek unique units could only be trained from fortresses. It was not before the expansion that these could be trained in regular buildings.

However, it would mean that Poseidon would own (discounted) cavalry against all enemy unit types.

Then again, I could swear that I read not long ago that cataphracts were supposed to belong to Hades before it was decided to take them out of the game.
