Yes you can play AoM online, although beware of newer copies of the game that are either incompatible with ESO or come with a universal product key which will not work on ESO. You'll have far more chance of being able to play online if you have an old copy of the game (or at least some original product keys from a previous purchase of the game).
You'll find around 600-800 people online generally, with peaks just above 1000. You'll find the most people online at the weekends or in the late evening in Europe (so late afternoon in the US/Canada).
The game isn't amazingly well balanced but it's not as bad as most people will have you believe.
