Here is an article I posted on MFO. I am 1800+ with Ra.I think I have some decent opinions on Ra.
What makes Ra weak:
I do play Ra a lot and I really miss some offensive/military god power.Except myth age,Ra has no offensive GP at all.That makes Ra lack of a heavy punch which any other god has.
Zeus/Poseidon:Bronze
Hades:Curse
Odin:Frost/Walking tree.Loki Flaming weapon/Walking tree,Thor: Frost/Flaming weapon
Set/Isis: Ancestor.
These god power cast in early heroic could be a game winner.Whenever they are cast,they are battle winner.And GP like Restore,the snakes in classic also can win you an early battle(always very important one) while Ra cant have.
On the other hand,Ra has no heavy punch in classic age either.With the fact that egypt has lowest gathering rate and egypt has weakest military units in barracks(I know they are cheap on cost,but not anything cheap on pop cost),thus egypt need more vills to compete on economic and need more units to compete on military,that makes egypt need more total pop to compete with other civs.Set has very pop effctive animals,Isis have 3 extra pops.Ra has no such bonus.All Ra get is 5% of one kind of resource from the pharoh empowering.That's about 2% in total economic.Priest empowering resource when pop full is dumb as I said a lot of times before.
Here is another crown for Ra.He got worst scout in the game!Somebody use blind to describe Ra.When you play a greek,I see some greek player use their scout to play your priest.You have 2 choice that time,abandon scout and hide in a tower.Or send vills/pharoh to help.First way you are real blind now.2nd way you lose vill seconds( a lot) and the greek scout just run away.Norse can do the same but normally their ulf is the builder,so it's not as bad as greek's. I think all the scout units should be even in fight each other or the faster one is weaker on attack.
Ra is very strong when he is in myth age and full upgraded(either barrack units or midgol units).He can have either best barrack units or midgol units among egypt.I believe with equal skill,in very late age,Ra can beat most gods.Only some greek can compete.The only problem is if you can survive that long.
I think Ra's priest empowering should be 15% or 20% to make priest empowering really useful.
Ra's monument cheaper bonus almost cant be felt.The first 2 monument cost 300 resource in toal and 25% discount saved Ra 75 resource,well, one axeman.I dont know how many games does the Ra player get third monument and laters.I have very rare chance to spend that much resource on a monument which will bring me some benefit like 3 minutes later.I dont like Apostate's idea that Ra can build extra monument.If you mean 6th(which is even expensive or as expensive as the 5th) then it's useless at all.Ra is very powerful in myth age and if you can afford that much resource,you'd better go to myth age and you could win.While if the monument means the 0th,like cheaper than 1st one or as cheap as first one,LOL,I would like that,but maybe other players will say that's overpowered.
I dont know what kind of god ES want make Ra look like.I can see Zeus is a heavy mythology related god,loki has good hersir to rush,thor has better economic and can have elite army early.Poseidon's cavalry is their major direct,hades's archer...Isis can mass more units with the 3 pop bonus and monument block GP.Set's animal.Anyway when you mention a civ,you know some strong pointof a civ,but when you call Ra,what's his strong point? It was the midgol units.Now it isnt.
