There has been a Poll at AomFiles, and the community voted they wanted a scenario design contest. And so I, TheOdenKing, prominent POTD viewer(), am proud to present Realms of Myth, our biggest (if not first) scenario contest!

Scenarios will be judged on many aspects. This contest will be different in that it does not have one catagory. You can submit ANY KIND of scenario (meaning adaption of something already made, original, RPG, linear, etc.) You can make anything SINGLE-PLAYER. We have five awards that will be given:

Best Story: A scenario with a beautiful, creative, deep, and compelling plot line, personality, and idea.

Best Eye Candy: Obviously, a scenario with amazing visuals, cinematics, and a lot of time put into the appearance.

Best Technical/Trigger Work: Scenario with advanced scripted events, cycles, and simply a lot of technical work.

Best Innovation: A scenario with a truly unique idea, plot, character, or gameplay element.

Best Adaption/Representation: This scenario will use an idea already created, but will be judged on how well that idea was represented. Note: this catagory excludes LotR and historical events up until AD 1200.

There you have it. There will essentially be five winners, one for each catagory. You will not have to apply for a specific catagory, so if you want the eye candy award, you are still eligible for the best story. There will, however, be only one winner in each catagory. Here are the details:

Deadline: All entries must be in by February 1, 2005.

Send To: Send all files as an e-mail attachment to Zeus174@aomfiles.com. Title the e-mail Realms of Myth_entry name. The e-mail itself must have your name, username, scenario title, and any info you need to include.

Mods: You are free to use mods if you have the permission of the creator of the mod. If you do so, need to mention that creator in your e-mail. Mods will not count toward the judging, though they can add to how compelling the story is. I mean that they will not be judged on how they look, but only as they add to the scenario.

Judging: The judges consist of Zeus174, s7092910, and tekn04, all mappers in the prominent AoM Modder/Mapper Clan (Whose famed LotR Project comes out soon, and of which I am a part too.) More judges may be chosen from that clan.

Well, that's it. Any questions can be e-mailed to Zeus174@aomfiles.com or posted here or at AomFiles (you will get a faster response if you e-mail Zeus174). Good luck in winning and have a great journey through the Realms of Myth!

Nice, I especially like the different categories.

Question: What about already submitted or announced scenarios?

Def More Time. I was wondering, are there any prizes for the winners or is it simply honour. Not that that would stop me entering mind you.

I'll definitely enter, if announced scenarios can enter. And even so... Everybody already forgot mine I guess . However, as everybody before me, and undoubtly many after me will remark: we need more time ! Face it, noone can finish their scenario in 1.5 month, even if their already working on it !

I'll ask for more time. I just edited the "I am zeus 174" and the "dear people at aomfiles" bits out

I'm not sure about released or announced scen's, but I'm almost sure they're allowed. I'll ask.

Well, here I am to answer your questions. I am head admin on AoM Files and the creator of this contest. I am so greatful that many plan to join. Our humble site has ben declining of late.

in any case, I have moved the dealine to April 1st. That should give time. Announced scenarios are allowed, but released ones are not. One of the main reasons I am putting this on is because we need some new files to feature.

Any other questions?

Rest in peace, Flip. The AoM community will never be the same.

Like the description says, you don't enter in a specific catagory. However, you can try for one, which is encouraged.

It is true, I have moved the deadline to April 1st, 2005. I originally started it earlier to prevent procrastinators from putting it off and then not doing it at all. I really want this to be a success.

I'll enter an RPG... assuming I can finish it in time.

It was going to be my entry for joining Tsunami, but after at least three weeks I haven't gotten another e-mail. Now, I've lost my patience and no longer care to join their studio. Which one should I join next...

"And the AoMFiles Award for Best Story goes to... "

Very interesting idea for the various "Best of" categories (reminds me of the Academy Awards for films ). There is one thing that doesn't make a lot of sense to me, however:

Quote:

There will, however, be only one winner in each catagory.

Let's say that there is one scenario with the most compelling story in the contest, and it won the prize for best story.

But at the same time, it also had outstanding visual designs/eye candies, and even the second best scenario in map design was behind it by a huge gap (let's say a 9.5 compared to a 7)...

It would seem fairly odd based on this rule to give a 7-qualitly map the Best Visual design award, because the better map was not qualified since it already won an award.

But most importantly, this also makes the Best Visual design (or other category) less accurate -- and thus, less valuable, since the winner of the award didn't really earned it.

Well, just my two cents . I hope you guys know what I meant. Goodluck to you running a fun and successful contest.

I see your point. If here is a single scenario that far outqualifies in two or more catagories (which is unlikely) I will probably make a Best Overall award or something. It would be kind of like the Academy Award for Best Picture. Anyway, the scenario could not be so good that I or another judge could not choose between which award to give. Example: If a scenario has great story and great eye candy, we could probably decide which is better compared to that specific project, rather than the other entries. If the story was more-liked than the eye candy in that scenario alone, it would get Best Story.

Oh, I'm glad you like my various awards idea. I did want it to be seen like the Academy Awards in that way.

April 1st, great. That secures enough time... And no-one answer my question. Are there prizes envolved? It still slightly biased however even when choosing which is the better category in a specific scenario as, in accordance to alexanders post, a player could attain a 9 in both visual and story and then be awarded the award for story and then a person with a 7 in visual awarded that category winner. I suppose overall will solve this however.

Loooks like a good contest. Make sure to alter the deadline in the announcement post.

As far as prizes, there should be SOMETHING... even if it is an AOM pencil or T-shirt. Ambition Designs had a screenshot contest once and the winner got his/her screenshot on a mousepad as a prize.

If there are any AoMM/MC members entering, we will certainly not be biased toward them. However, if they choose to enter, they will probably end up winning. (I mean, if there was a modding contest, we have Dnas. We have great mappers there). I just wanted some mappers that I already knew very well and knew they knew what an outstading scenario looked like.

Also, I'm really glad you will be making this news on AoMH. Just remember to emphasize that AoM Files is putting this contest on. One of its purposes is to boost popularity for our declining site.

Like in the HOM contest, will the judges just be looking for a 20 mins game? Or will they be expecting God in scenario form?
How will they mark?
Who are the judges?

The scenario should be moderatly timed, but if limiting the time will limit your efforts, than don't worry about it. We want you to make the best you can, and if it needs to be long, than make it long.

The judges are myself, tekn04, and s7092910. More judges will come.

Ok, this has been added to the front page now (along with my announcement thread yay, lol - although my name is spelt incorrectly ) So it should recieve more publicity.

Quote:

However, if they choose to enter, they will probably end up winning.

This is early signs of biased judging, not a critisim but its human mind wavelength. If AOM M/Mc decide to enter, it does not mean they will surely win. Just becuase Dnas is the most acclaimed modder out there, this doesn't mean that the scenario itself will be good. You cannot have a good scenario even if the mods are graet if there is not eyecandy, storyline, trigger techniques etc.

The screenshot contest at Ambition Designs prize sounded like a very good choice in regards to the contest. For this on there should atleast be something, even if small.

One more question, i'm assuming one cannot enter campaigns. If campaigns are allowed then I will not bother entering becuase LotR is going to win hands down in that case. It should be kept to single scenarios or perhaos 2 scenario campaigns in special circumstances.

If 3 months for HoM was clearly too short, don't go for less time! I'd say June 1st or July 1st. February 1st is just over a month away; nobody can design a scenario that fast.
