By positioning dead hero bodies up, they can float to create good and sometimes amusing screens such as: tell me what you think

I believe they are sandstone sprites but I could be wrong...

I think that most people know it is just no one uses it, not sure though? Also isn't the ground on the second pic just a terrain?

There are a lot of tricks you can do by scaling and rotating. I just put a shot into the Screenshot Story Thread of a Tireme, but I don't like they way it sits too high in the water, so I shrunk it way down, then moved it.. It pops down closer to the water based on the new size. Next you just size it up again to the original size and it sits deeper in the water and looks better. The Vortex landing object can be moved anywhere on the map at any height or angle (as long as its visible side is showing). It is not bound to the land, water or sky. If you tilt the right way, it will move forward and stay in whatever direction it is pointing. You can make it stand upright like a portal that you can walk through or make it some freaky warp tunnel way up in the sky.

The gold things are probably a mod.
I'm not sure, but I believe the image overlay at the bottom right corner might have something to do with it.
