A mod from Purple Design Studios

The Roman Legionary is a single-unit mod brought to you by the modders of Purple Design Studios, and will be released for both vanilla AoM, and AoM:TT/Gold Edition, as with all of our projects. The unit may be featured in a future scenario project, with no specific plans yet.

==========================

This mod has many features, including the following:

  • Brand new historically accurate down to the weaponry models and animations
  • Detailed, hand-drawn textures*
  • Testudo formation (pictured below) created using unittransform technology
  • Unique historically accurate attack animation
  • Relatively low-polygon model for an enourmous amount of simultaneous units (338 polygons)
  • Roman pilum, the designated weaponry of the Legionaries of Rome
  • Player color-compatible texture

Some re-enactors creating the testudo formation, as featured in the Roman Legionarius mod

    ==========================

    Working on this project are:

  • Purple Puppy - Model Concept
  • The Purple People Eater - Textures
  • Sir Dundo- Animations & Models
  • Petar Tasev - Scripting
  • The Purple People Eater - Proto and Techtree Modification
    ==========================

    Screenshots
  • Beta - Single-unit shot
  • Beta - 12 legionaries displaying color compatibility
  • Beta - A group of legionaries
  • Beta - body texture
  • New! Gourgeous up close... - from RC1 testing
  • New! ...And it fits right in from far away! - from RC1 testing

But the Roman mythology was basically copied from that of the Greek traders who settled in southern Italy. I had hoped you would've done a Trojan civ/unit if I & Unsung Hero had done the research. Aren"t you just duplicaring Rome Total War? With some cosmetic/texture changes your commendable creation could be Trojan spearmen/hoplites

I'm not forcing you to download it. It's not copied from anything. If you really need me to, I'll even show you our sources.

Is there any point making a unit which doesn't belong to a distinctive civ?

Well, first off, yes. What about the Hulk and Captain America Mod?

Second, this belongs to the greek civilization.

Romans are Italian, not Greek. Couldn't you, instead, have made a square or triangular tutle fomation mod for Greek hoplites & Egy spearmen, with foot archers following bahind & cav & other units on flanks? Which was an actual ancient battle formation. Is this formation mod transferrable to hoplites & spearmen?

Very neat. And, the model looks great.

Now, you can get working on my mod!

@gadunz: Man, I will make a suggestion, if you'd allow me to; please, don't criticize others' mod ideas like that. People are free to make mods about whatever they want.

Oh, BTW, VERY NICE model and textures. I'm still puzzled by the fact that you got the unit to adopt a specific animation when in formation. Lookin' forward to download it!

Yes, nice mod. I'm just expressing my disappointment after the long talk PPE & I had about Trojans on "All civs have been done " thread

I think it's not yet released. Oh, and BTW ganduz, if you're disappointed with a mod, try to say it in a non-aggresive, polite manner

You can't be dissapointed about a mod before it's ever released. Maybe someday we will do a Trojan civilization.....to add to the many others that people have already done.

    @ Ursus

It's not released yet. The to-do list is already in my main post.

    An update:

We're very sorry for the delay, and its my fault. I didn't get textures done for a long time, but we are now back in full stride on the Legionary.

Unfortunately, we may have to cancel the testudo formation unless we can find another coder who is able to do it.

We've also reassigned the animating jobs to Sir Dundo, who you may know from LTA.

I know we've been lame, but this will most likely be released in January. Again, sorry for the delay, and we're appreciative of you all for waiting.

Yes but each was developed to suit and become uniquely part of their own cultures in special ways, so you can't exactly say it was basically copied because every single culture shares resemblances...

Hey PPE, I'm glad this project is finally almost done. What is meant by "scripting", though? The task that's "unasigned". If it means AI modifications, I would be happy to help out.

its different to that when the legionarius goes into the box formation it would go into the turtle formation and coding that would be pretty hard

The anim is left to be done, and if you can get the testudo formation to work then we can re-add that feature.

I am very sorry about the wait, but this project will happen.

Thanks to Sir Dundo, leader of Modsmith Studios, member of PDS and LTA, I am proud to present the following progress:

    [JPEG, (298.31 KB)]

    [JPEG, (449.42 KB)]

Unfortunately, our scripter for this project (Hades..) apparently forgot that he didn't know how to script.. so we are having to drop the testudo formation until further notice.

    Things left to be done:

  • Anim
  • Slight texture changes include pilum & shield back texturing and fixing of minor arm and leg problems
  • Animations (thanks to Sir Dundo )

Technically it supports every color AoM can dish out, but that would require editting Playercolors.XMB.

Well after you finish the animations I can let Petar know that his coding job is up for grabs.
