A mod from Purple Design Studios

The Roman Legionary is a single-unit mod brought to you by the modders of Purple Design Studios, and will be released for both vanilla AoM, and AoM:TT/Gold Edition, as with all of our projects. The unit may be featured in a future scenario project, with no specific plans yet.

==========================

This mod has many features, including the following:

  • Brand new historically accurate down to the weaponry models and animations
  • Detailed, hand-drawn textures*
  • Testudo formation (pictured below) created using unittransform technology
  • Unique historically accurate attack animation
  • Relatively low-polygon model for an enourmous amount of simultaneous units (338 polygons)
  • Roman pilum, the designated weaponry of the Legionaries of Rome
  • Player color-compatible texture

Some re-enactors creating the testudo formation, as featured in the Roman Legionarius mod

    No release dates.

But it should be done by the next few weeks if all goes well and Petar can get some time on his hands.

Things that need to be done still are simply the animations and editing a few files (probably the anim) to get animation names right. We are near finishing though!

    @ Petar

I just said this at PDS, but in case you haven't checked yet, Proto and Techtree have already been written to comply with historical standards, sorry. Good with the lang, anim and UT though.

who cares if the romans copied their gods from the greeks, i don't could you not make the romans into their own Civ? and you could ask to use Dan_Swordsman's awesome centurion/pratorian mods as heroes

*AHEM* The romans did not copy thier gods from the greeks, but when the romans encountered the greeks they started merging thier pantheon into their own.

roman legionaeries used the gladius, a short stabbing sword, not spears.

    also, they had pila.

there segmented plate armor was called lorica segmenta.

sorry, i watch the history channel too much.

They used both. They carried a 12ft long pilum, as well as a short sword known as the gladius, a dagger (pugio) and two javelins: the pilum and a lighter one, I forget the name. Pila is plural for pilum, which is the spear shown in this mod.

Here's a picture of a dork in a costume, just for laughs.

We did more research for this project than you could possibly imagine. Trust me.

Good news! The Legionarius is currently in pre-release beta testing to team members, and should be released sometime this month! To celebrate, we've posted two brand new screenshots for you to drool over! Enjoy!

The mod will still feature the testudo formation that is now constructed using unittransform functions, 4 shiny brand new sound files, the ability to take on up to 3 hoplites by itself to simulate the result of a complex, rigorous training course that the legionaries, the highly-trained units of the Roman Legion, would undergo before being commissioned, and will be trained at Academies everywhere!

    (Finally! I know, right?)

Erm, PPE, I think you kinda squashed the picture.. :P

Anyways, yes, the Legionary has all required animations done, with the Testudo needing one or two. When we finally get everything together, we expect a release by the 15th of this month.

Excelent models and textures! The fact is i think they're right about the civilization. I don't care about that so much, but i think that if you could do that, you can do a hole civilization. Do it, i'd download it!

I don't think I would have a problem with a full Roman civ. Finding animators capable of a project like that could be tough, but temporary recruits aren't such a bad thing.

If we get a few more people that would like to see a full fledge civilization (or at least a large modpack), then I will start looking around.

    I know, I know.

You're all thinking "Wait, wasn't this going to be released on August 15th like it said in the Newsletter that everyone reads?".

Well, yeah. It was supposed to be. But here we are. But we bring great news of great successes! There is minimal work to be done before it is completed: One death animation for the testudo legionarius.

That and a few minor code changes and such. Nothing massive. It's coming, and it's really, really close.
