FAQ:

  •  I get an error that says "Initialization Failed" when I start my game after installing a mod. What do I do?
    This error is almost always caused by an improperly installed mod. Sometimes it's something else. Undo what you did and try again. If you're still having trouble, outline what you did here and we can help.

  •  How can I easily view and edit the xpacklanguage.dll file?
    Download Resource Hacker, you can find it in one of the links above.

  •  Is there a way to stop the player color from showing up in a texture?
    Cover the white bits in the bottom half of the texture file with black. That should solve it.

  •  Is there anywhere I can find a list of all the possible VisualParticles for the anim files? ie. HeroGlow, Kronos Smoke, etc.
    Visual Particles are stored in the Models bar files. Extract, and sort by type. They are the .PRTs.
    These are code that run a series of .tga files (9-12 played in cycles) and can be varied by replacing the images through a hex edit of the .prt.
    Somewhere in the code are things like size/speed etc. but it's inconsistent. Just pick a .prt that is about the size you want and create the .tga files. They work like 12/4/0/5 bitmaps using grey-scale for transparency.

  •  How do you change the music? ie. add your own music to the game so you can play it while listening to your favorite music?

  •  How can I make my own campaigns?
    Use this.

  •  How can I change the names of the ai?
    See here.

  •  How do I add multiple mods so they don't overwrite eachother?
    This will teach you how to edit your protox and add mods on top of eachother.

  •  How can I make my own BAR files?
    Download this.

  •  Where is the main game folder for the Steam version of AoM?
    Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Age of Mythology.

    @Hoodedwarbler: By that you mean dragging the texture into the area within the perimeter created by the lines? I do that but it doesn't work.

    Indeed I have a question, one that requires answering.
    I'll shed some background first.
    Well, I was modding a new unit, and after changing the name of the unit in XML i notepad, I converted back the file to XMB to see if I had everything correct.
    Upon opening AoM, the menu screen's background textures were all different colours of tile- red, blue, grey, and green.
    Not only that, I can now no longer go into the Editor mode without AoM exiting on me...

    Soooo, what have done wrong, and how can I fix it guys?

    Not sure what when wrong there, but if you used AoMed to convert the XML to XMB, you didn't need to do that, the current XMB updates to the edited XML automatically when you start AoM. And I don't think your problem would be just the XML unless you accidentally deleted certain things

    What is the Ice Block unit used for, if anything? The ones in the Frost GP look bigger, but I can't find anything in the Frost GP file about Ice Blocks. Are they part of the freezing function or is there a totally different unit?

    They are the unit created upon freezing, sadly the naming of it is in the exe, rather than any xml.

    Reyk brought us the New X Editor too. That is basically the best contribution to scenario design besides all nottud's triggers and such.

    im trying to edit a model but when I use the export script it gives an error message I read somewhere that this is because I added vertices.
    so now I cant get the model ingame, is there another way?

    btw im using 3ds max

    hello

    i got a little problem here with a mod i'm trying to make.
    basically my friends and me were getting rather frustrated over the very limited population.
    so i started looking into modding.

    now i pretty much figured out how to increase the build limit on house/manors and how to increase their population addition.
    but next to that, you are still limited by the maximum 300 population cap.
    now i haven't been able to find this attribute anywhere. been looking online as well.
    does anyone know where or how i can change it?

    The code is called PopulationCost if I remember it right, and every trainable unit has one. Change it to zero if you want to remove pop cap completely, otherwise you could just decrease the number. It's quite an effort doing it for every unit, but I think there's several edited proto and protox files in the downloads section.

    Sometimes I like to take screenshots. But only sometimes.

    ah right i could change that to 0 if the program can work with that.
    though i would prefere the actual max cap to be raised since it allows for some balancing still.
    is it possible that the popcap is set somewhere else, like in the program itself?

    anyway, thank you for your reply. if it's not possible to do it properly i will use the way you suggested.

    Chances are it's in the exe somewhere. There shouldn't be many 300's in there.

    See If you can contact Stephen C, I believe he has some expierence with the pop cap.
    Also what do you think about a Random Map Guide? I'm thinking of writing one for scenario designers but if no one is interested then I may just do it as a side project ~ Steak
