have u used Gmax before ?
if you are already familiar with Gmax then ignor this next part ,
you cant just open a 3ds file in Gmax you have to import it , first click file / import then brouse to your 3ds files / chouse your file / choose to merge or replace / click on the maxscript tab / click run script / brouse to your Gmax import scripts , either export_gmax.ms or importsm_gmax.ms , I normaly have less trouble with importsm but if it dont work try the other one .
sorry if you already know this.

humm I dont think ive seen that error before , if your using the same steps I layed out before it should be working. what model r you trying to import and I can try to open it myself if its a AOM model ? have you tryed more than one model?
if you cant import any models id try to reinstall Gmax you might have a bad download.

I actually need help with something, my game has continuously failed to convert xmls to xmbs, of any type, regardless of their formatting (they are NOT wrong, even copies of the original don't work). I'm wondering if anyone can tell my why it isn't working. I know I can convert them with aomed, but that's an extra step I don't want to spend the time on. Plus if I leave an xml in there then I can't play the game without exiting using task manager or start button. I'm wondering if anyone knows what's causing this, it's happened once before, but it fixed itself after a while so I never figured out what caused.

I have a few questions about Gmax:
What program can I use to convert Gaia idle into a file that can be imported? It isnt a BRG file.
If I wanted to combine a few models. In this case 3 hesperedis trees, 2 gaia trees and gaia idle, how can I import the textures for all of them?
I have tried to enlarge a model on gmax, just an idle one so there is minimal movement. But when i do it wants me to get a model that takes the same amount of time, so I select the model that it was based on but it says that it doesnt work, what should I do?
If someone could answer these I would be very grateful.

I may be able to anser some of your questions, first off the Gaia models are .grn files or granny files you need a special model editer to open them , Gmax ,Blender and I beleave 3dmax cant open them , last I heard this program was very costly , however in the case of Gaia there are two of her animations that are .brgs her birth and death , what you can do is import one of them and deleat all the amimations , but if you want her to move you will have to animate her your self , Ive done this and its a good deal of work.
as far as Importing more than one model in Gmax at a time thats kinda easy just import the first model and in the upper right hand corner you can find the name of the model , at this point it will be called Animated , what you have to do is change the name to anything other than Animated , like Animatedxx then import your next model and merge it with the first , you can repeat this as many times as you want then attack them to each other , but remember when your done to change the name back to Animated or it wont export . also you will have to open the material editer and remove all the materials other than the ones your base model has , to find out what ones you base model has just open it by it self.
as far as textures go I dont know how to add multiple textures to a model , but one thing I do is I double the size of the base texture then I can put both textures together on a single ddt , you then will have to put it in you Gmax maps folder and apply it to your model and then use unwrapuvw to place your texture where you need it .
this is not the easyest way to deal with this but it the only way I know.
