If a person does wish to see villager count on un-upgraded program, they can hold mouse over the food, wood, or gold values and it will display how many villies are on that resource.
If indeed it is not working properly, I think Microslave has fixed this on mrfixitonline.com
with his latest patch for vanilla aom and tt titans expansion versions.
