"In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort." - The Hobbit, by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien
The scenario 'The Hobbit' chronicles nearly every major plot point in the novel, from the encounter with the Trolls to the Battle of Five Armies. I tried to stay as close to the original story as possible, incorporating a lot of dialogue straight from the book. Other features include:
- Different gameplay methods such as stealth and strategy
- RPG elements such as sub-quests
- A level-up system based on the number and type of enemies you kill
- A bonus mission should you reach high enough a level
- Cinematic cut-scenes render important points of the plot
- An 'html' readme file which contains many tips and tricks, as well as a comprehensive walkthrough for every sub-quest and power-up in the game
- Different modes of gameplay for beginners and experts
NOTE: The scenario can theoretically be played on all difficulty levels, with varying degrees of difficulty respectively. I would play on 'Easy' though, for that is what I based my play-testing on.
Enjoy!
Sincerely, Istari

Just go to your 'Microsoft Games' folder under 'Program Files', then 'Age of Mythology', then 'scenarios' and put the '.scn' file there once it's unzipped. You don't have to put the 'html' file anywhere; it's just a readme. Then run the game and go to 'Load Scenario', I believe. :) |

Playability: 4
There was really nothing wrong with the playability. The only problem was that sometimes people got stuck between trees, houses, etc. But really nothing major. I guess you can't really prevent that anyways. It was extremely fun, though. I liked the whole thing. Parts that I liked the most were Beorn, The Battle of Five Armies, and Mirkwood.
Balance: 5
There was great balance. You could play it on "real mode" (for more of a challenge) or "easy mode" (for newbs like me). At any rate, it wasn't too hard, or too easy. I had to restart a couple times, but it wasn't too much.
Creativity: 5
Sure, it wasn't your story, but no one else has created a Hobbit scenario. Or atleast a successful one. Most people attempt LOTR scenarios anyway. Nice idea on the "leveling up" and exprience. That was a really original concept that I have never seen before.
Map Design: 5
Of course I had to give you a 5 on this!!!! And considereing it was made with Vanilla, that is even better! GREAT MAP WITH EYECANDY EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!! It was a huge map, so that also makes the work put into it much more!
Story/Instructions: 5
Instructions were always clear, no problem here.
Additional Comments:
Wow! That was a GREAT scenario. It was a huge file, though, so that makes saving it take a long time, but great job, nonetheless.
PS: How long did you spend on this scenario? It looks like 2 years!!![Edited on 11/04/04 @ 04:25 PM]

Ummm... ok I failed when I got to the caves... Bilbo got lost and for some reason he looked like Ajax (?) and then it said "You are Defeated". It was very random. Can someone help? |

Wow! This scenario is awesome! If anyone hasn't downloaded this yet, I strongly reccomend that you do. The Hobbit is so well done that it ranks as one of the two or three best single-player scenarios on the site, along with the likes of Shilmista and Felix Hermannson's Circe scenarios. Here's why:
Playability: 4
The Hobbit is very "professional" when it comes to playability, far more than Istari's Sorcery. First off, it was completely bugless except for one thing which I'll address in a moment. All environments were fully explorable. It was also the right length of time. You could either stick to the bare bones of the story, or you could go off on side quests in order to gain experience. The experience serves both as a way to upgrade your party and to unlock the secret level if you get enough. The cinematics were practically flawless. There will be some lag on slower computers but this is solved by setting the graphics detail to LOW.
Here are two issues that kept The Hobbit from getting a 5 in playability:
-The final battle. People should pay attention to their final battles, and this one didn't look good. Basically all you did was stand there until the cutscene took over. Plus (the only bug), Heracles (Beorn) usually died soon after his arrival. I suggest making this part lengthier and harder (i.e. requiring Bilbo to kill a certain number of enemies or having enemies attack him).
-You should make the first dragon's lair sequence (where Bilbo sneaks in) a little harder, and include some dialogue from the book.
Reviewer's Tilt: I am a fan of RPG scenarios, hard as they are to make for AOM, and this one works perfectly. I loved almost everything about it except for the aforementioned problems. Oh, and I liked how you reset black map after cutscenes to make it more realistic.
Balance: 5
Everything about this scenario is evenly balanced. The most important thing to say here is that the two different game modes (Real Mode and Easy Mode I think) work as intended. With the simple mode it is hard to lose, but definitely possible if there is no micromanagement. With Real Mode there is a bigger chance of losing, and some heavy micro is called for in some places. Overall, balance is perfect (except in the final battle, which is already mentioned.)
Also, the stealth sequences were balanced: you could avoid the large enemy groups and the individual guards; get a guard to follow you and you could evade him, but set a large group on your tail and there was no escape.
Creativity: 5
To say that this is a very creative scenario would be an understatement. Jeez, even that last statement would be an understatement. This is just about THE most creative scenario in this department.
No one exept Istari has ever had a complete experience point system, much less one that is as professional-looking. There were some other things in there which I had never seen before. The stealth parts were some of the best...ever!
With regard to the Hobbit story, you used great techniques to translate some of the parts in the book into the scenario. Especially Hobbiton, the Misty Mountains/goblin cave, and Laketown.
The best part of all this is that Istari only used Vanilla AOM to make it.
Map Design: 5
The Hobbit has wonderful eyecandy, not overdone like in some scenarios, but just the right amount, much like Shilmista.
The map also had strategic planning and design. Just about everything looked natural (well...natural for Middle-Earth.)
Story/Instructions: 5
I'm not going to be a loser and subtract points because this scenario was not an original story, I'm going to say that it really does a great job of paying homage to The Hobbit and complements it at places. What you've done is taken a great story and transposed it with extreme accuracy into an AOM scenario. I felt completely immersed at points.
Also, the instructions were clear and could be interpereted easily. I liked how you listed all the sidequests at the beginning.
