No Point

Author File Description
Silver Husky
File Details
Version: AoM
Something wasn’t right. They felt it for quite a while. Sure, the world looked absolutely normal. Birds were singing. Trees were standing there being green and stuff. Eye candy was lying on the ground, ridiculously plentiful and totally covering the grass and making eyes bleed and computers explode, like any respectable AoM eye candy does. Yet there was this strange feeling on emptiness... Then, one day, sitting in a tavern, our heroes Arkantos and Ajax finally realised.
Some bastard stole the point of scenario of which they were main characters!

And so began the epic story of bravery, heroism, and explicit idiocy. Will they find the point of scenario? Will they slash their way through dozens of random encounters? What does the strange old man want? And will our heroes survive the worst ambush in military history?

Having nothing better to do during the summer, I decided to mess with the AoM editor for a while. And so it all begun. The result of this work, "No Point", the only satirical scenario I know of, is now avaliable for download.

"No Point" features:

Over 14 minutes of cinematics;

Around 295 triggers;

An actual challenge. Not like, go down the road and kill random MU;

Multiple custom sounds;

Use of animations, icons, music, sounds, and other nifty things that make it look... er, nifty;

Many amazing and original quests [braaaaaaaag];

"No Point" does not feature:

Logical plotline

“The plot is brilliant. (...) this scenario is GOOD. As in GOOD GOOD.” – Happy Playtester.

Have fun.

UPDATE November 7: Fixed the transportation bug, added some minor corrections. Overall nothing you would notice :P

A couple of (in my mind mostly lame) jokes don't make a good scenario. It's your basic RPG and a pretty bad one at that. The player can just walk down a road and kill everyone he meets. Making fun of that does not make it better, it's still boring. Besides, there are several bugs in there as bez mentioned.

Balance: 2
It's so easy it's not fun to play. The two heroes can defeat or outrun everything on the road without much problems, and Chirons army is strong enough and can kill the enemy soldiers one by one because they just stand around and wait to be attacked.

Creativity: 4
The idea of a fun scenario was good, problem is you were not nearly as creative with the scenario. If you strip away the jokes you end up with a boring little RPG. The cinematics at least were not bad.

Map Design: 4
Not bad, certainly better than a random map. The buildings don't look bad, but nothing especially great either. And all people just stand around, no one is working or or at least walking around. It could still look much better.

Story/Instructions: 4
The instructions are clear, easy when they are always the same. The "story" is, ah, pointless. In a bad sense. But you worked a lot on the background, and the atmosphere saves you here.

Additional Comments:
Too bad you and your buddies take the ratings far more seriously than the scenario is meant to be. A pretty good impression got ruined by all this cheating here. And no, that didn't go into the score.
Next time, spend your time on the playability aspects and you might actually end up with a worthy contender for the top list.

The trees and path make it extremely easy to understand where to go - along with roadblocks so you don't get "lost". It doesn't lag at all.
However, the transport scene doesn't always work - so that needs fixing. The ability to skip the intro cinematic would also be nice. You can also run past many of the random encounters (such as the first three horses).

Overall, it's probably around a 3 rating (which is pretty good :))

Balance: 5
It's not too hard, not too easy. It starts out with merely killing three horses and then going to harder challenges. The fights are also quite spread out so you have time to relax a bit before going into another battle.

Creativity: 4
Awesome idea for a pointless scenario. The beginning "No Point" title with the boost objects are also neat. Great jokes in the Capital and Bathroom, along with many other sidequests. Ajax getting kicked was one of the one of the funniest. :D

Map Design: 4
Not too much eye-candy but that doesn't really matter. Could have had more elevation and roads were sometimes too square and perfect. But overall it looked great!

Story/Instructions: 5
Great "logical" plot! Funny! Easy to understand!

Additional Comments:

Maybe you should post a guide to this to make sure we check out every "secret" and funny stuff in the scenario lol. Good luck with the updated one.

It was really fun. The jokes in it are worth the download. Some bugs here and there keep it from getting perfect, but nothing major.
-The teleporting, though, after I found out the reason, it became more of an added objective: Don't let the heroes die at the beginning.
-I don't know if this is a bug, but I didn't regain LOS after the toilet. Oh well. Made it fun.
-Also, the toilet didn't reveal itself because I somehow walked around the place that 'turned on the lights'

Balance: 5
At first it was easy. But then it got progressly harder to the point where you simply have to run and manuever your way to the end. To me, that's how scenarios should be. Sort of gives to player a chance to 'learn' as you go.

Creativity: 5
Do I need to explain myself here. This thing is the most creative scenario I have ever seen. It is hilarious. The ideas are all great. I could go on and on. The toilet, the 1s, the flying squid, the epilogue, the laboratory.

Map Design: 5
The eye candy was nice. Especially the toilet. That part was simply perfect.

Story/Instructions: 5
GREAT story. One of the best I've ever seen. The instructions were hilarious as well.

Additional Comments:
Anyone who loves a laugh MUST download this scenario. Period. (Or rather, exclamation mark)

Funny. Quite funny. (Fav part BTW was the part where the enemy guy was introduced) I simply loved it. There were two bugs I should point out: The river bug, which to get around cheat to get shifting sands. There's also the bug where after Ajax exits the bathroom, the heroes line of sight is still very low. FUNNY! (did I already say that?)

Balance: 5
BEST BALANCE! There were spots when my heroes were on the brink of doom and I just barely squezed through. A true sign of perfect balance.

Creativity: 5
This idea is creative and never been used before. The ending was a little anticlimatic, but I aint complaining!

Map Design: 4
Awesome map. The inn scenes made really good use of boxes. But it needed just one more special something to get a five here. Really good, though.

Story/Instructions: 5
Story is wonderful, and instructions *almost* always clear. Liked how objectives were introduced like "You've got mail" and such. Everyone should do that from now on.

Additional Comments:
Best scenario I've ever played. Better than all the scens I've ever played COMBINED! I simply cannot wait till your next one! Keep up the great work!

(I got lucky enough to ran into No Problem at all all along the this fine journey. And beside the funny point, oups!!! the funny No Point, sorry, it was quite an anjoyable challenge and fun game to actually... play!)

Balance: 5
(It gets kind of hard when you finally encounter a couple of ballistas mixed with some very evil... fences ( the worst opponents of this scenario to me! ) and... a pair of avengers. But it's gonna be a 5 anyway since I trully believe this stuff deserve a lot more than a 4,3.)

Creativity: 5
( Beside a No Point scenario, there is nothing I would like even better but maybe an " Off Topics " scenario. But I have to admit No Point sounds even nicer... )

Map Design: 5
(Fine for AOM Vanilla only, and I sadly know what I'm talking about since that's all I can play myself... But there was some interesting litlle details that I saw nowhere else... And... it's gonna be a 5 anyway since I trully believe this stuff deserve a lot more than a 4,3.)

Story/Instructions: 5
(Never got lost. And... it's gonna be a 5 anyway since I trully believe this stuff deserve a lot more than a 4,3.)

Additional Comments:
Someone who just finished playing ( He might be the only one actually... ) my Regi's Way scenario told me I should take a good look at this very interesting piece of art called " No Point ". I'm glad he did it. I simply... loved it.
Too bad I couldn't find any sequel to this... Is there any? I looked and didn't find any though...

Brilliant!

Playability: 4.5 (Rounds up)
Its a shame to mark you down for such a great scenario. I could not fault you in this category, however I marked you as 4.5 because if a player did not discover Zebra's weapon shop, they would not understand the final cinematic. But its their fault for not being adventurous ;).

Balance: 4.5 (Rounds down)
The units were balanced well but one the first mission where you had to find Greta Forkbeard there were too many enemies, only by one or two though. I decided to round down ebcause I rounded playability up.

Creativity: 5
One of the most creative scenarios I have ever seen! All the missions has a great hilarious storyline and I especially liked the little extra like Athena, Zulu Attack and teen gril Squad! Youve also used animations to their full potential especially when Chiron kicked Ajax, very funny! Also the random quotes by villagers just gave it that extra laugh. The LoTR scenario bit was also extremely funny.

Map Design: 5
I cant fault you here either, the map had nice terrain mizing even though it was grass with a nice placement of trees. This is a great example of how to make grass look nice, although you could have added some more bushes. The extra cinematic places were placed expertly, so they could not be seen during the scenario.

Story/Instructions: 5
Pretty simple, nothing wrong with your instructions and I iknew what to do every step of the way. I especially like the messages and objective, humour always helps people understand the instructions and makes the whole map more enjoyable.

Additional Comments:
The humour in this scenario is fantastic, i was laughing almost all the way, the sound files gave me another thing to laugh at. You really should make a sequel because I would like to encourage humourous scenarios.

Great job!

Absolutely amazing fun. This's at as high a standard as campaigns from Ensemble Studios themselves. This was smooth as.

Balance: 5
Excellent. You were given enough troops and power to make it tough without it being impossible.

Creativity: 5
Don't know how you thought of it, but it was absolutely brilliant. The toilet really gave you the mental impression of an actual toilet, and your humor was great aswell. I loved the squid that overthrew Zeus and the fact that you had scarabs as cockroaches in the toilet, the suicidal Kamos scene and even when Chiron kicked Ajax in the -3.

Map Design: 5
Eye-Candy was eye wateringly spectacular, as well as all your little extra sections like Hephaestus's Collossi factory or the mountain with Zeus on it.

Story/Instructions: 5
Very clearly and well planned out. At no point in the level was I wondering what to do or where to go. The plot was a original and creative (not to mention plain daft) and extremely funny.

Additional Comments:
Brilliant work. I know I'm rating this completely full on everything and that may be a bit over the top but in my eyes this scenario deserves the highest possible score it can get. After playing that scenario it took all my will power to make myself actually write a proper review as oppose to just filling all the boxes with things like OMG, ROFLMAOOL!!

I don't know how you did it but you did. That was SO cool. Please do make a sequel!

Okay, now that I'm done ranting I have a design question:

How do you make it that gates that aren't on your team (eg. with your scen, 1 & 3) open for eachothers troops WITHOUT giving them LOS over eachother's gates?

Like in your scenario, you make it that when you come to a Player 3 gate, it opens for Arkantos and Ajax and lets them through. While in the editor I placed down a random P1 unit and tried to pass through a P3 gate, but it wouldn't open for me, so clearly it wasn't to do with the diplomacy.

Did you use triggers or what? Remember that what I'm asking is how to give one player entry through another's gates WITHOUT giving them LOS on the gates themself.

You also used this technique on P5's Underworld Passage after the part where you kill the assasin, because you were able to use the passage even though it was invoked by a player who wasn't even an ally.

Please tell me how you did these things! I will be very grateful!
