The Modders and Mappers of the Liquid Fire Studios: Legends of the Third Age Team Proudly Present....
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
For over 2 years, the Legends of the Third Age team have been working to re-create the first installment of Tolkien's classic Lord of the Rings trilogy in AoM. In this long-awaited campaign, the player follows the adventures of the nine members of the Fellowship in their quest to destroy the One Ring. The scenarios are made to the highest quality by some of the best designers in the community, and will lead the player from the sweeping rural hills of the Shire to the deepest depths of Moria to the wooded ruins of Amon Hen. Complex map design and amazing eye candy will keep gamers coming back simply to watch the brilliantly created cinematics. Even more fantastic is the completely original soundtrack created by a true genius at his craft. From Rivendell to Mordor, Legends of the Third Age: The Fellowship of the Ring brings Middle-Earth alive like never before.
Aside from the excellent scenarios, The Fellowship of the Ring boasts what may be the largest and most expansive modpack in Age of Mythology history. Each weapon is authentic, and gamers will feel the fires of the Balrog and hear the crack of Gimli's axe. Each face of each hero is authentic and detailed, as is every structure in the many exotic Middle-Earth locales. The mods were made by legends in the Age of Mythology community, and the quality does show.
The Fellowship of the Ring has features such as:
- The world of J.R.R tolkein created in AoM for the first time!
- 12 beautiful maps, pain-stakingly made to the finest quality by some of the best Age of Mythology mappers out there.
- The largest and most detailed modpack ever created in AoM!
- Original and never before seen game play.
- Extensive and professional sound track.

===IMPORTANT===
When installing, you extract the extractor to your AOM INSTALL FOLDER,
not the folder you downloaded the file to.
Your AoM install folder is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Mythology\.
It is NOT My Documents\My Games\Age of Mythology.
If you extracted incorrectly,and re-extracted, you must run the
lta.exe inside the AoM folder, NOT the one created from the
mis-extraction.
Please do not pester us about something not working if you did not
extract to the AOM INSTALL FOLDER.
If you are getting an error about rockalldll.dll, you have not
extracted it properly.

Well, I can't play LTA yet since I can't play AoM right now, but I think I am still allowed to comment based on what I know and read here.
If this project is recieving low marks because its scenario design is poor, then the scenario design should not be the focus on the reviews. This is an all-around project, with mods and a campaign, so just because it is posted in the campaign section the scenarios should become a priority. Personally, I feel that LTA is only posted here because the campaign ties the mods together; this is not a modpack with some random units with no particullar use. LTA should at least get a 5 for creativity on mods.
Hoping to play LTA soon,

I think some people are missing the point here. The scenarios and modpacks are the files that make the campaign itself, as one big archive. It wouldnt make sense to review the campaign based on the modpacks only, and not take much in consideration the scenarios.
The modpacks make a big part of the campaign, but not all of it, and unfortunately, the scenarios were the weakest part of the project.
Keep in mind people, It is not johnattan's opinion, but rather true facts supported by well made statements(almost most of it). just read his review more carefully, and diregard critizism or personal vengetta(if you have any).
I think what came wrong to this project was that the authors were already expecting big 5's and tons of positive comments...somehow this is unexpected. like someone already posted, effort is not rated, but the result of the effort IS. In my opinion it wouldnt had hurt to take a little bit longer in fixing and improving the scenarios, perhaps more dedicated playtesters would have prevented this.
People kept bugging to release this as soon as possible. Maybe you guys rushed by all the pressure? This is why a large project shouldnt be announced so early...in my opinion. The larger the project, the more testing and re-testing it requires.
Another thing that wonders me. I notice that alot of the people involved in this arent really part of LFS nor M/M team. So...shouldnt be this be considered more of a community type of thing, rather than LFS as the main and M/M as the co-cooperator?
============================
REGARDING JOHNATTAN'S REVIEW:
Though I somehow agree the rating is kind of low. His rating focused more on the scenarios rather than the positive attributes the modpack brought. For example, in creativity, shouldnt it deserve a 5? Not to be annoying or anything but none of the modpacks and effort was mention AT ALL, i mean the positive side of it.
Lets be realistic here, It is far behond impossible to bring LoTR into AoM that easily into PERFECTION, unless of course the best designers, trigger makers, and cinematic creators were gathered together along with 20+ playtesters.
Another point johnattan, "worth not download" seems more of a personal vengetta rather than a true fact. Remember, every player is judge of whether it is worth playing or not. Putting this will just cause a bad image among people who might think its worth installing and playing.
The map design factor should be brought up by one point at least. Take in mind the mods. Some added detail to the scenarios. Just consider what the scenarios would look like without them. Eyecandy was greatly increased by mods, believe it or not.
------
Mere Suggestion: Johnattan consider going over your review. Some points are exagerating, such as "frodo carrying a sword when in the real story he wasnt during a certain part". Nothing in the campaign can be as perfect as the portion of the Trilogy of LoTR, dont be so harsh in trying to compair the campaign to the real LoTR series with so much detail. Judge whats possible/fair instead of comparing it to perfection.
-------
Suggestion For Designers: For a large project like this i would SERIOUSLY suggest the ability to skip cinematics.
======
Suggestion for the team(s): If getting a high rating for the Modpack is so important, consider uploading it into a different submittion. that way you guys would get 5s for sure.
If I were to review, I would give a 4+. The whole thing deserves more than average...yet I havent really got into checking triggers or analizing the whole scenarios, checking the modpacks, or finishing the whole campaign at all. Nevertheless, a 4 would justify fairly....for now.

Yeah, i feel really bad for you guys. Heres the biggest, grandest project ever to bless AOM, and people are giving it 2.8 ratings. I hope it picks up for you guys soon :) |

Well said Auron.
I really don't understand why people are saying the map design is bad.. I started playing this last night and from what I saw the map design looked quite good. And the modpack should really be counted as eyecandy.
I also don't think that people should lower their ratings over things like "rivendelle didn't look like rivendelle in the movies".. does anyone realise how hard it would be to replicate Rivendelle in the AoM editor?
Anyway I just want to say congratulations to the whole LTA team, you have all put soo much effort into this campaign/modpack and have had many setbacks. I think you all did a great job and I wish you luck with TTT and ROTK, and hey mabye I might even try to get involved with the next two campaigns. :) |

@Gaurdian_112:
To clarify my first statement, I brought the map design down to a 3 because I felt that it did not portray what was shown in the movie - at all.
@Auron:
The two quotes you had in your well put statement was not all of what I said. I said that the modpack made up for the file size, and the Frodo with the sword was a mere observation that I did not count towards the review.
@Swift Sampson:
Actually, I've been considering this myself, and I think it's rather possible. The AoM editor isn't THAT limiting.
Sorry for any confusion.
And thank you, I will take your suggestion and look over my review, as a review that was done in an hour for such a large scaled project is certainly prone to errors and questionable statements.[Edited on 04/30/06 @ 09:44 PM]

Thanks Swift.
@Tiber: I'm disappointed with your review. Particularly the balance rating. You've mentioned things that just aren't true. The dogs on farmer maggots does NOT use a death condition or a timer it uses a distance condition. You have to move far enough away from the farm for it to work. It worked perfectly in all of testing we've done and no one else has complained about it so far.
The locusts - you're the only one who's said it's too hard. Jonathon said it was too easy.
And the cave troll in moria - it's there. Believe me. |

Well it is really, since the LTA Team can recruit whoever they like. It would become chaos if we openned the project to the whole community though. Oh on that note: We are looking for more scenario designers and modders; please post in the LTA thread if you're interested.
Thanks for the review Titan, I know how tiring it is to write a credible one; maybe EaZy won't shoot himself now :)

I do not remember the review guide saying that your reviews would be judged. You may not like them, but I'm entitled to my own opinion, and the review system encourages me to share it. In my opinion, this just wasn't a great campaign. I think you are being a bit proud here - you have every right to be, but not to the extent of judging the reviews you are given and saying that they should be removed. I don't see Papaya removing it, so why shouldn't it stay? |

Thank you very much, Titan! Finally, a 4+ review.
The team is currently working on a patch to get the biggest bugs and overall problems out of the project. |
